Victorian, circa 1870 Minton Majolica salt which features ring handles and lion paw feet. Turquoise ground version. Colouration: turquoise, pink, ochre, are predominant. The piece bears makers marks for the Minton pottery. Marks include a factory specific date cipher for the year 1870. Book reference not found. Very good. No restoration. Almost nil wear. Dull gilt decoration. Vent hole to underside and reverse. Similar piece illustrated figure 1143, page 312, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding. Good. No cracks. Flake to ground between ankles, another to lower lip and some small flakes around the lower base edge. A few paint losses to scarf and one shoe. Some rubbing to gilt. Kiln effects: craze lines to the mold join down one side; overall crazing. Restored chip to reverse of hat. Retouched flakes to front of hat and finger of right hand. Date cipher for 1884 Large Gustafsberg Majolica compote. The top is decorated with a mottled brown/ochre center, surrounded by four decorative dragon panels. Four oval mottled plaques in-between. Brown gadrooned border around the rim, with studded bands outlining the panels and center. A hexagonal column forms the stand, with four griffins well modeled at the bottom. Circular base with fluted border around the edge. Green reverse. Maker''s mark impressed ''GUSTAFSBERG 84'' with an anchor inside the stand. Good. No cracks. No hairlines. No flakes.
