Victorian, circa 1880 Holdcroft Majolica compote molded in the form of a putto merman/mermaid, seated on a bed of seaweed, supporting a large brown scallop shell above its head. Circular base with brown shell surround. Pink interior. Gray underside with three stilt marks. Generally good. No cracks. No hairlines. A flake to one shell on the base, and some small flakes to rim. Some wear to interior. Kiln effects: glaze pops to underside of large shell; some staining to putto body and face; glaze run down back from hair; some stray blue glaze spots and a glaze miss to shell interior. Repair to where the shell joins the stand, and to the smaller shell on top of the putto''s head. Restored rim chips. 7.5ins high « Less

Victorian, circa 1860 Pair Staffordshire figures of John Milton and William Shakespeare, both leaning on a podium. Milton has a parchment, a pen and a book. Shakespeare has books and a parchment. Both arms and one leg of each are molded free. Shaped bases with old, dull gilt decoration to the front and to their clothes. Decorated all round. Hollow bases with a painted mark. Similar Milton piece illustrated figure 203, page 86, and similar Shakespeare piece illustrated figure 320 P, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding. Both on horseback molded on gilt tilted bases, each horse has three legs molded free. Bright colorful glazes, dull gilt decoration, title and line to base. Vent hole to reverse. Similar pieces illustrated figures 737/738, page 213, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding. Good. Louis: Two chips to lower base edge. Two chips to underside. A few paint losses to horse''s tail and harness. Kiln effects: some cobalt glaze run; some staining to craze lines to reverse; shrinkage line along mold join on right shoulder. Shrinkage crack to underside. Repair to neck and restored chip to hat. Flatback, decorated only to the front. Multi-coloured, including underglaze blue. Vent hole to the reverse. This piece represents a meadow scene. No book reference found. Generally good. Tiny chips to base edge on reverse. Abrasion to cows nose. Some rubbing to gilt. Kiln effects: kiln soot caught in the glaze to the reverse. A snake is coiled around a hollow in the tree, which forms the pipe rest. Cover is decorated with shells and a frog, with the finial molded as a toadstool beside a branch.
