Right facing: Generally good. Tight hairline to base front, and another across the horse''s front right ankle extending to the reverse of the piece. Very minor paint loss to tail. Kiln effects: stray green enamel to hind right leg; shrinkage ''fractures'' in the green enamel. Restoration of front left leg and hind right lower leg. Retouching to mane and muzzle. Left facing: Good. Paint loss to muzzle. Kiln effects: shrinkage line to underside; shrinkage line along the mold join over the horse''s chest; small shrinkage line at back of tail (not visible from the front); small shrinkage ''fractures'' in the green enamel. Three stilt marks inside the foot rim, along with impressed maker''s marks ''M.MAFRA CALDAS PORTUGAL'' and the number ''4'' inscribed below. Generally good. No cracks. Tight rim hairline to reverse only. Two chips and a flake to the foot rim. Large flake to reverse. Minor flaking to the moss. Kiln effect: glaze accumulation to the foot rim. Mottled green and brown underside with impressed marks and painted ''5211'' in reserve. Cover is molded with a fish lying on a bed of reeds, which forms the handle. Pink interior. Three stilt marks to underneath of cover. Good. No hairlines. Cover: two small rim flakes. Repair across one corner. Dish: small chip to rim. A couple of shrinkage cracks where dish meets stand. Embossed maker''s mark inside the cups ''GEO DAVIDSON EST. 1867 ENGLAND''. Ormolu twin branch frame with ''CLARKE''S TRADE ''CRICKLITE'' MARK'' inscribed on the inside of both cup holder rings. Frame attached to a sharply cut footed standard. Cricklite fairy lamps were commonly used for dining room lighting at the turn of the 20thC.
