Victorian, circa 1870 Pair Staffordshire figures depicting the British Lion and Napoleon. A large lion sits upon Napoleon. This model was probably produced at the time of the Anglo-French war scare of 1860. Bright gilt decoration and base line. Creamy glaze with blue tinge. Vent hole to reverses. Similar figure illustrated on page 300, ''Staffordshire Portrait Figures'' by P. D. Gordon Pugh. Generally good. No restoration. No hairlines. Minor chips and a bruise to foot rim of left facing figure. Flake to one ear of each lion. Minor paint losses to both figures. Gilt rubbed. Minor wear to reverse of both figures. Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Decorated in the round with decoration to the front and the reverse. Book reference not found. Right facing: Generally good. Kiln effects: firing crack to the back leg; shrinkage crack to the tail to the reverse; glaze pops to the russet enamel. Stabilized and retouched hairline to front leg. Retouching to the coat. Modeled on a naturalistic oval base with shredded clay decoration. All four legs of each cow are molded free. Dull gilt decoration and base line. Decorated all round. Vent hole to underside. Good. The girl has two bundles of corn in her lap. Two legs of each cow, and one leg of the boy are molded free. Shredded clay decoration to the ground and tree. Dull gilt decoration and base line. Cream interior and underside. Cover with a salamander forming the finial. Cream underside. Stand with green mossy ground around a green center. Green reverse with three stilt marks.
