Vent hole to reverse and underside. Similar piece illustrated in, ''A-Z of Staffordshire Dogs, A Potted History'', by Clive Mason Pope, page 103, figure 54. Right facing: Good. Some tiny flakes to the paintwork. Kiln effects: fleck of stray black glaze to the reverse. Restored chip to tail. Retouching to minor paint losses. Left facing: Good. Feint star crack to the leg. Right facing: Slight wear to chest and left ear. Kiln effects: small firing hole next to left ear; shrinkage crack to side of basket; glaze miss to underside; craze lines to front and reverse; crazing. Restored flake to reverse. Retouching to some of the markings and green leaves. Left facing: Very minor paint loss to the brown enamel and orange flower. Kiln effects: craze line behind left ear; crazing. George IV, dated 1824 1824 Silkwork Sampler by Jane Roberts. Framed in a modern gilt and wood frame with glass. Stitched to linen and mounted on fine linen with wooden backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours blues, greens, silver, magenta, cream and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads ''See how the lilies flourish white and fair> See how the ravens fed from heaven are> Then never distrust thy God for clothes and bread> Whilst lilies flourish and the ravens fed> Gay dainty flowers go swiftly to decay> Poor wretched lifes short portion flies away> We eat we drink we sleep but lo anon> Old age steals on us never thought upon''. Signed and dated ''Jane Roberts Anno Domini 1824''. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, the sun, birds, flowers, recumbent stags, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets and flower baskets. Generally Good. Several holes around the edge and a couple to the centre. Old tack holes with rust staining to the linen edging. A few light stain specks. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Slight colour run around the darker green threads. Unevenly stretched. William IV, dated May 1st 1837 Large 1837 Sampler by Anne Gronshaw. Framed in an old wood frame with glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours pinks, cream, red, pale blue, gold, black, olive green, grey and dark green. Verses read ''How few and evil are thy days> Man of a Woman born> Trouble and peril haunt thy ways> Forth like a flower at noon> And dost thou look on such an one> Will god to judgment call> A worm for what a worm hath done> Against the lord of all> Man lieth down no more to wake> Till yonder arching sphere> Shall with a roll of thunder break> And nature disappear> Oh hide me till thy wrath be past> Thou who canst kill or save> Hide me where hope may anchor fast> In my redeemers grave''. Signed and dated ''Ann Gronshaw may 1st 1827''. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a large building, possibly Solomon''s Temple, angels, flowers, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, fir trees, trees, a church and birds. Right facing has a bird sat on the ground behind the dog. Both dogs have three legs molded free. Shredded clay decoration to bases. Dull gilt collars and lockets. Small vent hole to underside of right facing and reverse of left facing. Similar piece illustrated figure 2698, page 214, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours red, cream, blue, light brown, white, black, light green, orange, olive green and pink. Verse reads ''Jesus stands with open arms> Inviting sinners home> His voice contains a thousand charms> And every charm says come''. Signed and dated ''Jane Ingham''s Work 1835.''. A good set of motifs, including a large building with gatehouses, possibly Solomon''s temple, flanked by trees, birds, flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, fruit trees, figures and potted flowering plants. Generally Good. One hole to the left hand edge. Some plucks to the ground in places. Stain at the bottom of the sampler. Very minor stitch loss to a couple of the potted flowering plant motifs.
