Dull gilt base line and embellishment. Flatback, decorated mainly to the front. Vent hole to the underside. Victorian, circa 1870 Minton Majolica game pie dish and cover. Rustic handles in the form of branches bound together with rope. Four claw feet. Cream basket weave ground with a panel on either side, one with a pheasant, the other with a hare, and sprigs of holly sprouting from the handles. Cover is surmounted by a hunting dog asleep beside a rifle, powder flask and game bag. Turquoise interior. Three stilt marks and a vent hole to reverse of cover. Three stilt marks to underside of dish with impressed maker''s marks ''MINTONS'' and ''964''. Vent hole underneath the feet. Good. Dish: Small flake to rim. Some wear to interior. Repair to one foot. The fish forms the handle and spout. Fine molding and clear bright glazes. ''H. PROTAT'' incised to the base. Green glaze and three stilt marks underneath the base, along with impressed maker''s marks ''MINTON'', ''1241'' and date cipher for 1866. Similar piece illustrated on page 57, Abrams ''Majolica A complete History and illustrated Survey'' by Karmason & Stacke. Generally good. No hairlines. One tiny chip to the reeds. No flakes. Very finely decorated all round. Vent hole inside the bases. Similar pair illustrated on page 290 ''People, Passions, Pastimes, and Pleasures Staffordshire Figures 1810-1835'' by Myrna Schkolne. Good. Hen: Tiny paint loss to tail and crest. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack to the hen''s rump and foliage. Restoration of middle toe on right foot and a repaired hairline further up the leg. Retouching to top of base and around the lower base edge. Cockerel: Slight rubbing to enamels on top of base. Kiln effect: firing crack inside the tail feathers. Restored chip to lower base edge. The pieces have possibly been matched together at some stage. We think this because they have different colouration. Rainbow base version. These are based on the antique marble lions which stand at the entrance of the Loggia dei Lanzi, a building in Florence, Italy. Decorated all round. Four vent holes underneath the base. Similar piece illustrated figure 53, page 196, ''English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840'' by Pat Halfpenny. Generally good. Right facing: Two teeth chipped. Some paint losses to brown enamel on the mane, belly, tail and around the base. Repair to interface where lion meets base. Repair to front right ankle. Restoration of tail and hind right leg.
