Antique, Edwardian ring. Platinum set with a cushion cut Mexican fire opal, surrounded by a ring of diamonds. Made during the first decade of the 20th century - 1900 - 1910. Measurements and sizes: Just under a US size 7. Weighs 2.3grams. Just under a half carat of diamonds. Exquisitely made ring: a flower formed by a ring of diamonds - European cut, S11 in a filigree platinum setting. The diamonds enclose a marvellous cushion cut fire opal of an amazing shade of orange. This ring was my personal favourate for many years and taught me to truly appreciate the colour orange. This stone is a good indication of why the fire opal is the national stone of Mexico. Workmanship is fabulous - from the tight setting of the diamonds, to the creamy cutting of the opal and the openwork supporting ''scales'' at the back. Hallmarked PLAT 100. Good condition. Estate ring. Platinum set with a 2 carat emerald offset by diamonds. Has Victorian look, but believed to be made much later - possibly 2nd half of 20th century. Measurements and sizes: US ring size 7. Weighs 4.5 grams. Stones: 2 carat emerald; .036ct diamonds. Sold to me as Victorian, but I believe it to be 2nd half of 20th century. Gorgeous, delicate design with lacy openwork finely set with diamonds in filigree platinum, surrounding and framing a beautiful 2 carat, pear-shaped emerald, somewhat raised above the plain of the diamond background and enclosed in a platinum colette. The fine diamond lacey background continues on the shoulders. No hallmarks, but tested as platinum. Very good condition. y-smoothe, flexible and sturdy chain. Since the links face all directions around the tube, they catch and play with the light in an understated display of the gold''s brilliance. We had the simple clasp added to the chain in order to facilitate putting it on. The side loops were already there, so the chain''s integrity was not compromised in any way. The slide in repousse gold in Rococo foliate form with exquisite detail. Can be brought up to sit at the nape of the neck, or lower down, closer to the rest of the enhancements. The chain terminates in the original watch fob, a cuffed hand. According to the book, Understanding Jewellery by Bennett and Mascetti (page 130), Gold hand clasps were popular between 1830-1840. This is not a true clasp as it does not open, but it is very beautifully done with super detail and extraordinarilly, the part directly above the cuff is linked to a repousse foliate section (matching the slide in theme), via very finely made hinges. This results in greater movement. The hand is joined to a series of bars, links and loops, presumably for hanging more enhancers. The whole terminates in a triple chain with tassles. The ''housing'' of the tassles in two-coloured gold, with raised foliate decoration and a line of black enamel (with a minute fleck missing as seen under a magnifying glass). A very full fringe of bead-tipped tassles. I believe the tassles may be a later addition. There are a number of eagle-head hallmarks, as can be clearly seen in the ''photos. Good condition. Antique signed Ferdinand Preiss miniature carved figurines of baby children. Made very early in the 20th century - probably between 1907-1920''s, in Germany. More »
Antique signed Ferdinand Preiss miniature carved figurines of baby children. Made very early in the 20th century - probably between 1907-1920''s, in Germany. Measurements:approx 23mm (a little over 3/4inches) high. Length of the crawling baby is approx 1 1/4 inches (31mm) total length. Two toddlers - tiny children, marvellously captured in these hand done carvings. A little child sits and holds out one hand, chubby legs stretched out, a small smile on the tiny mouth. The other child is crawling along, dressed only in a bib, the rest of his body literally ''butt naked''. Details are amazing: from the tiny fingers and toes to the exact facial features and hair. ''photos are highly enlarged - see the details of this great quality work. Babies are always cute and these two are exceptionally so, especially the little boy with his naked behind. Both pieces are signed F. Preiss underneath. Condition is very good. Antique inlaid wooden inkwell. Made pre-Israel (Palestine) - first half of the 20th century at the height of the Bezalel Art School production. Measures 2 3/8 inches accross More »
Antique inlaid wooden inkwell. Made pre-Israel (Palestine) - first half of the 20th century at the height of the Bezalel Art School production. Measures 2 3/8 inches accross the top (square). A little over 1 3/4 inches high. Carved to look like a stack of books, in volumes I-V with a 6th, larger book placed on top of them (forming the lid). Beautiful detail to the carving, which shows top quality workmanship. The top is marked in Hebrew: YERUSHALEM, which denotes a pre-1948 date. It is inlaid with a bird, swooping down with an olive branch in it''s beak. The bird looks like a swallow. The lid inside has a red velvet lining, slightly worn where it has rubbed against the lid of the inkwell. There is a small crack on the inner right side of the lid, caused by natural wood shrinkage. Original hinges in good condition. A sturdy latch opens the lid of the inkwell and within is a small glass container. All in good condition. This inkwell is utterly charming in it''s bookish and peaceful themes. The wood has a beautiful patina formed over the years. Unusual pieces of Judaica of this sort are extremely difficult to find. n a wall. The upper right hand corner of the frame is a little worn, and there is general crackling to the material. Commensurate with the age. The painting itself is round. Site measurement is 3 1/2 inches in diameter. A gentleman, dressed entirely in black except for two tiny stripes of white on his collar, sits beneath a window, next to a table. He wears a black skullcap of sorts on his black, curly hair. His righ arm is extended on the table, holding up a book, bound in red. One page reads: ''CONSTITUCION. POLITICA DE LA MORIET ..? JA ESP UL.A''. The latter part is not quite clear, but the beginning is (see ''photos) and hints at a politically important person. Next to the book are 3 inkwells and sand jars, with 3 feather quills for writing on a green tablecloth. Next to them is a page with handwritten: '' ADM GILLER..MORENO MALAGA '' in black and above that, in red, ''N CADIZ''. Both Malaga and Cadiz were important Spanish naval towns. Behind the gentleman is a fanastic view of ships out at sea, including a tiny row-boat, as well as buildings and many Cyprus trees. The details of the painting are quite fabulous: from the patterns on both curtains to that on the tablecloth and the fringes that fall down on the side of the table. Hair and facial features are finely painted. The painting is signed, what looks like MESAS PINXIT and dated 1821. (see ''photos). Condition is all original and very good. This is certainly a historic and important person and a depiction of an age long gone by. eting a skullcap crown and then repeated in his very full beard. The butterfly gentleman is more Assyrian in appearance, with long locks and a more carefully trimmed beard. Both men are shown in profile. Both are in very good condition. The bottom two cameos are carved from other hardstones. One, in a buttery agate-looking stone with a soft brown background carved away from the whiter upper area, depicts a beautiful Classical woman, probably Greek if one were to guess from her features and the diaphenous robe partially shown, that reveals a bare shoulder. She has a complex band in her hair with gentle curles escaping to frame her face and at the nape of her neck. Great carving with super detail, if in need of a gentle cleaning. The last was saved for best: this is known as a gryllus - it is a single cameo that depicts no less than 4 heads, both human and bestial, metamorphosizing into and from each other, in profile, under a seashell. The carving is exquisite and brilliant, using at least 3 layers of the onyx. It depicts one woman, one sheep and two men. They are carved in white above a black background and above them all is a dark brown, shiny shell or other creature that partially overlaps itself. This incredible piece is extremely rare and the workmanship of the most superior quality. The general condition of the earrings is very good. Parts could do with a cleaning if the new owner so desired and one could hang something from the little loops underneath the center of the top cameos. No damage. Antique snuff box. Believed to originate early in the 19th century - circa 1830, possibly in Bavaria. Measures 3 1/2 inches long. Entirely carved of wood. Even the hinges are exquisitely made of wood. The bottom and sides are burl wood. THe sides curve in a full, rounded form. THe lid extends very slightly over the edge of the sides and is carved to appear as though it is being rolled back. The top of the lid is superbly handcarved with a pair of performers / entertainers: a man playing the violin, seated on a barrel. At his tapping feet is a dog, wearing a top hat and standing on his hind quarters, possibly dancing in time to the music. The man''s hair flies behind him. Antique Georgian earrings. Gold, enamel and diamonds. Very tiny - probably for a baby or small child. Made circa 1795-1810. Length, not including the earwires is 11mm (under 1/2 inch). Diamond drops are approx 2mm long. Together weigh 1gram. The Classic look of this tiny pair of earrings is very much in line with the style of Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte''s court. A round disk, white enamal border, deep blue ground with a golden daisy-like flower with a white enamel center. The disk suspends a pear-shaped rose-cut diamond, collet-set with the back fully enclosed. The way the gold is ''pulled'' up around the diamond indicates a very early date. While there are no hallmarks, the disks test for 18k gold. Good condition with natural negligible signs of age such as minor crazing to some parts of enamel and replaced earwires. Antique Victorian earrings. Like most Victorian jewellery, gems set in silver on gold. Circa 1860-80. Approximately 1 3/4 inches long. Weigh 7.8grams together. Ear studds replace the original earwires. They are connected by loops to an oval support on which a bird, with partially open wings perches above a moving branch with foliage and golden berries. Another gold ''berry'' (a gold bead) swings from the bottom. The bird is pave set with turquoise and pearls and has one red eye, which is probably a tiny ruby (too small for me to test). The gold is variously textured with very fine detail to the foliage. The earrings are very well made and quite exquisite. Very comfortable to wear and best of all, match every outfit. Guarranteed to get a lot of compliments every time you wear them. No marks on the gold, tested for 9 carats. Very good condition.
