Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the century. As a struggling and relatively unknown artist of Czech origin living in Paris, Mucha achieved immediate fame when, in December 1894, he accepted a commission to create a poster for one of the greatest actresses of this time, Sarah Bernhardt. Though the printer was apprehensive about submitting Mucha«s final design because of its new unconventional style, Bernhardt loved it and so did the public. «Le style Mucha«, as Art Nouveau was known in its earliest days, was born. The success of that first poster brought a 6 years contract between Bernhardt and Mucha and in the following years his work for her and others included costumes and stage decorations, designs for magazines and book covers, jewellery and furniture and numerous posters. Mucha was much sought after by both private and public clients, and Lefevre Utile used him for more than one type of their biscuits - in fact we have another wonderful Lu Biscuit piece which Mucha did in the gallery at the moment. Mucha felt that art existed only to communicate a spiritual message, and nothing more' - one can see in this commercial work that the great master managed to bring a certain spirituality to the most mundane biscuits, and to do it with grace, style and elan, as only he could do.

Di Fausto, Fiorentino
26,5 x 39
A poster of Rhodes published by the Italian travel department à which, given the history of the island of Rhodes, makes this a historically significant poster: the à now à Greek island of Rhodos was taken by Italy in 1912 when it belonged to Turkey, and given (back) to greece in 1947. The poster dates from 1927, as the logos of the Italian tourism dates from the fascist era. Of the history of Rhodes, Wikipedia writes: in 1912, Italy seized Rhodes from the Turks. The island's population thus bypassed many of the events associated with the 'exchange of the minorities' between Greece and Turkey. Due to the Treaty of Lausanne, the island, together with the Dodecanese, was officially assigned to Italy. It became the core of their possession of the Isole Italiane dell'Egeo. Following the Italian Armistice of September 8th,1943, the British attempted to get the Italian garrison on Rhodes to change sides. This was anticipated by the German Army, which succeeded in occupying the island. In great measure, the German occupation caused the British failure in the subsequent Dodecanese Campaign.' This poster came to us from the collection of a Dutch diplomat. We have recently had it restored and linen lined to preserve its artistic and physical integrity. It's condition is B+ and it measures 39 x 26.5.
