Late Edo Era, first half of the 19th century. A Tamba stoneware lidded pot, with a fitted and loop handled lid, with overglazing in white and brown Tamba style drip form, the base unglazed. Ceramics at Tamba (near Kyoto) go back to the Kamakura era (1185-1334). Early production in the large number of kilns at Tamba was mostly of large naturally glazed utilitarian storage jars (Tsubo), wide mouthed jars (kame) and bowls for grating (suribachi). Large pots were first made from clay coils and then finished on potters wheels, from which they were fired without applied glaze. Early in the seventeenth century (Edo era 1603-1868) the potters at Tamba began to use applied glazes, and produced a variety of container styles. Very good condition, some glaze chips around rim of lid, no significant problems. 15.2 x 18.4 cm, 7'' wide x 7.7'' tall. Status: For Sale Reference#: 377564 Condition: minor chips Year: 1800 Title: tea ceremony japanese « Less

A super gunmetal black glaze covers this split handled medicine jar. Although unsigned, the glaze is nearly identical to item number 04061706, a piece with the impressed North State Pottery stamp. The condition is excellent. It has a glazed over short drying line on the rim, and a few pinhead sized flecks to the glaze. Winged putti frolic and play instruments in a circle around the body of this rare humidor by the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company. Best known for their work in and around New York City, they provided architectural detail to some of the finest buildings at the turn of the 20th Century. The base of this piece is only marked with an incised ''F22A^'' but I have had an identical example that was marked ''ATLANTIC''. The acanthus leaved cover also bears the same incised number on the underside. The condition should be considered excellent due to the fragile nature of the clay and the high relief, but there are several flakes to the highest points of the design and the lid has a small chip on the ''sleeve''on the underside. Allover it is an exceedingly rare example by one of the East Coast''s premiere architectural firms. Status: For Sale Reference#: 03112515 Condition: very good Year: c. 1900 Country: USA Maker: Atlantic Terra Cotta Company Height: 11 in. (27.94 cm) Width: 7 in. (17.78 cm) Style: Beaux Arts Materials: white faience clay « Less

There are great splashes of color on this piece of North Carolina pottery. It is a nice early piece in a conventional country form with lug handles. It does have a couple of minor flakes to the handles, small nicks to the rim, and an interior chip on the inside rim. Nonetheless, it shows well on a shelf and is a good colorful early piece of folk art. The base is unmarked.
