Pre-Victorian, circa 1830 Early Staffordshire Sherratt-type table base bocage figure of Saint Peter. Title on a plaque at the front. Saint Peter is kneeling on the ground holding a sword in his right hand, and with keys in his left. A larger key lies on the ground below. There is a bible on one side of the tree and a cockerel on the other side. Decorated all round. Generally good. No cracks. No hairlines. Chips to feet. A few paint losses to reverse of tree. Kiln effects: glaze miss to right leg; touch mark to head. Repair to neck and sword. Top left and top right bocage sections rebuilt. Old repairs to two table feet. Restored flake to right hand bocage. 10.75ins high   « Less

One of the very finest ivory carvings of Christ crucified I have found. This sculpture is large, 9.5" long, 6.75" wide and 1.5" high. It is in pristine condition; it is signed and the quality of the carving utterly magnificent! A truly rare, very desirable sculpture, likely dating from the mid-1800's, European. The pictures tell it all for this piece. The back side of the carving has yellowed with age. Remarkably, there are no hairline cracks in the ivory; no chips or missing fingertips. The crown of thorns, drops of blood, rope waist band, curling hair; all exceptional detail and aesthetic charm.   « Less

Truly superb artistry in the sculpture of Christ offered here. Hand carved in ivory, the figure Christ suffering on the cross. It comes with a gilt wood and velvet altar frame. The iron or steel 'nails' attaching the figure to the frame are missing. The back of the figure is so beautifully carved, I don't know that I would want it re-attached. Often the backs of the Christ figures are not particularly well wrought as there is an expectation that this will not be viewed. But all of the details on this figure are very well done. There is some loss to figure; 2 fingers on the left hand, 2 toes on the left foot. Also, the crown of thorns has broken off the front. Dating from the late 1700's early 1800's, perhaps a little damage is acceptable in so lovely an artist's rendering of the Passion of Christ.   « Less

Very decorative 18th century hand sculpted Christ crucified with a gilt wood and gesso frame. The carving of the Christ figure very well done; fine attention to detail and anatomical features. Christ's side is pierced, with drops of blood. The crown of thorns in excellent condition. There is some loss to the fingers on each hand. The altar frame, red velvet lined and with beautifully decorated gesso details, was originally intended for a larger Christ figure. But the proportions of the figure here to the frame are excellent. The original fittings are missing and while the frame is ready to hang, a more secure attachment of both the Christ figure and the small ivory "INRE" may be desired by the ultimate end user of this marvelous antique religious icon. The back of the frame retains the original shop name and address. Condition: as noted, the original fittings are missing. Some age related minor gilt loss and hairline cracks in the wood.
