Victorian, dated August 8th 1833 Large 1833 Sampler by Hannah Brown. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border, and divider lines in various patterns. Colours red, cream, yellow, green, pale blue, light brown, copper, light green, white and black. Verses read ''Thee I can love and thee alone> With pure delight and inward bliss> to know takst me for thine own> O what a happiness is this''. ''Nothing on earth do I desire> But thy pure love within my breast> This only this will I require> And freely give up all the rest''. ''Seek virtue and of that possest . Henceforth to God resign the rest''. Signed and dated ''Hannah Browns work finished August 8th 1833''. A wonderful set of motifs, including large potted flowering plant, flowers and birds. Good. No holes. A few stains and slight patchy staining of the ground. Some stitch losses to the top line of the border and the large central flower motif. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Colour run around the dark green and black threads. Neatly and evenly stretched. William IV, dated 1834 Pair 1834 Silkwork Sister Samplers by Lucy & Mary Cotton. Framed in old wood frames with glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The samplers are worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Zig zag border. Colour is black throughout. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-12. Verse on Mary Cotton''s sampler reads ''Study with care Politeness, that must teach> The modish forms of gesture and of speech;> In vain formality, with matron mien,> And pertness ape her with familiar grin.> They against nature for applauses strain,> Distort themselves, and give all others pain:> She moves with easy, tho; with measur''d pace,> And shews no part of study but the grace.''. Inscription reads ''To recollect a wellspent life, is to anticipate> the bliss of a future existence.''. Verse on Lucy Cotton''s sampler reads ''However in return for good, abused,> However ill or scandalously used,> In friendly actions still let''s persevere,> Lest our eyes swell with the unpity''d tear.> Since wants we once may feel, we can''t forsee,> Let not the heart be blind to misery:> Ill merit they the fortunes they possess,> Who never felt for other men''s distress.''. Signed and dated ''Mary Cotton Newmarket Novr 7th 1834'' and ''Lucy Cotton, Newmarket, March 3rd 1834.'' Newmarket is a town in the county of Suffolk, England. British crowns and coronets (King, Queen, Prince, Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount and Baron). Generally Good. Mary Cotton: Several small holes. Two small repairs to the inscription. Small stain to the top line of the verse. Slight discolouration of the ground in the top left half. Small stitch loss to one of the divider lines, and some of the losses in the divider lines have been re-stitched. Lucy Cotton: A few small holes. A number of stains and specks. Minor stitch loss to the upper case alphabets and smaller numbers. Colour is good and strong with no noticeable fading on both samplers. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours gold, cream, blue, dark brown, copper, black and dark green. Verse reads ''May the grace of Christ my Saviour> And the Father boundless love> With the Holy Spirits favour> Rest upon me from above> Thus may I abide in union> With my friends and the Lord> And possess in sweet communion> Joys which earth cannot afford''. Signed and dated ''Mary Ann Greatorex + Aged 12 Years Parwich 1844 Derbyshire''. A good set of motifs, including a house, birds, diamonds, flowers, suns, fruit trees, fir trees, potted flowering plant and fruit baskets. Generally Good. One small hole. A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a garden, flanked by trees, fruit basket, crowns, butterflies, potted flowering plants, trees, birds and stags. Fair. Simple line border, cross stitched in places along the right side, with meandering strawberries top and bottom. Colours cream, greens, dark red, yellow, copper, brown and black. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-9. Verse reads ''The LORD my Sheperd is> I shall be well supply''d since he is> mine and I am his what can I want besid''. Signed and dated ''Sarah Pickard 1782''. A few motifs including crowns, hearts and green plants. Very Good. No holes. A number of pale patchy stains, and uniform age darkening of the ground. Very minor stitch loss to the border. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Remnants of paper to the reverse, where the sampler was previously glued. Colours black, cream, pale blue, pale green, light brown, gold, light green and dark green. Verses read ''EDUCATION> Youth like softened Wax,with Ease will> take,Those Images that first Impressions> make:If those are fair,their Actions will be> bright,If foul,they''ll clouded be with shades> of Night''.
