Exquisite antique American New England High Chest. Circa 1780-1800. The description below was provided by Mr. Joe S. Byerly, founding member of the Museum of Southern Decorative Arts, Winston Salem, and antique dealer/ appraiser from 1962 – to present. "The chest has a bold crown mold, over six graduated drawers. The drawer fronts, crown mold, and feet are tiger maple, with straight grain maple sides. The chest is raised on original bracket feet with spurs. The case of the chest is dovetailed together as well as all the drawers. The hardware is of a later date, but is the correct style. The chest is well proportioned. The chest has been refinished at some point, but retains a nice mellow color." This chest measures 59 1/2 inches tall with a 35 1/2 inch width and a 17 1/2 inch depth The top crown molding measures 39 1/2 inch width x 20 inch depth. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL THE HANDCARVING ON BUFFET ARE MADE OF WOOD, THEY ARE NOT BRASS, AS PICTURE LIGHT MAKES THEM LOOK A LITTLE DIFFERENT COLOR. THE HARDWARE IS BRASS. These piece is incredible, as well as beautiful and rare and now I will describe it in detail and it's history. This elaborate buffet has been in my family since it's birth. It belonged to my great, great, grand mother who lived in a 18,000 sf estate in St. Louis Mo. All of the furniture was handcarved and this piece belonged to a 40 piece set of dining room furniture. It is amazing to see the inside color of the oak, light, and the dark outside from age. The condition of it is unbelievable, it is so good and so sturdy, they do not make them like this anymore. The only flaws being a few scratches, and nicks, as shown in pictures. Otherwise there is absolutely no damage or breaks or cracks, and all hardware is original brass, that definitely needs to be polished to look brass again, incredible for a piece from 1885. The description as read on an 1980 appraisal of actual value ,NOT INSURANCE, reads as follows. Buffet, oak, American, circa 1885, 92"wide, 36"high, 19"deep, brass hardware, 5 top drawers, pretty large some with dividers for silverware, etc., and 5 doors. The original skeleton key is also included, as all the drawers and cabinets have key holes to be locked. In those days the servants had sticky fingers I guess, so they were to prevent them from stealing. This was then handed down to my great grandmother, then grandmother, and then mother, and now me. I live in Florida in a modern high ceiling and bright home, and this piece really belongs in a museum or large formal home. The Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC has the exact same piece in one of their formal dining rooms. It will beautify any home in any room. Folding beveled glass mirrors and beveled glass work surfaces. Brass hinges, catches and details. Interior of case has original velvet compartments and light green enamel paint where the dressing bottles rest. There are two spring-loaded mechanisms to reach the secret, velvet lined jewelry drawers. The various dresser bottles are cut crystal and hallmarked sterling silver. The manicure set and other assorted pieces are ivory. At the base has a crack. 35" inches wide, 23" inches deep and 38" inches tall (closed) 57"inches tall (open).
