Lovely 19th century Pan or baby satyr bronze sculpture depicting a nude Pan or baby satyr playing pipes as he dances. The bronze is mounted on a beautiful specimen variegated marble base. The base has a minor chip on the underside at the bottom in the back, not really noticeable unless you pick it up and look at he bottom of the vase. This is mentioned for the sake of accuracy. Other than the minor chip to the base the sculpture is in excellent condition. It is very lifelike and very well sculptured. It dates circa 1880 and is a miniaturization of a life-size bronze sculpture that was made in the 18th century. Pieces like these were referred to as Grand Tour bronzes. They were miniatures of larger bigger than life bronzes made in the 1880s for travelers visiting Europe for the first time. Most were made in Italy or France, they are never signed. This is a wonderful example of a 19th century mythological Grand Tour bronze in excellent condition. The sculpture measures 11-3/4 inches high. The original marble specimen base measures 3-3/8 inches high. The bronze not including the base measures 8-1/2 inches high. Weight 5 lbs.
