44627 Antique Bergama, Turkey, nineteenth century - A design of diamond medallions with latchhook contours repeats in allover symmetry on this outstanding antique Bergama. The medallions along the central axis are rendered in single colors, while those to the sides are quartered, giving the composition a dynamic spontaneity. The main border has a classic diamond lattice pattern derived from the classic Turkish rugs of the early Ottoman period, with minor borders of checkers and barber poles to add a subtle framing reinforcement. But however striking the design may be, it is the palette of rich reds, blues, terracotta and ivory that makes this piece so extraordinary, even among the very best Bergamas. Antique ‘Tuduc/ Tadouk’ Rug, Early 20th Century Highly prized Mamluk carpets are the inspiration for this unique ‘Tuduc/Tadouk’ rug. Theodor Tuduc (1888-1983) was a well known weaver of reproductions who copied many of the great classic designs. Mamluk rugs were woven from the 15th century onwards and are now rare, hard to find and generally only in museums. This could possibly be one of the reproductions from the Tuduc atelier. 43181 Antique Ukrainian, Russia, late nineteenth century - This charming antique Ukrainian rug has a design inspired by the Savonnerie carpets of contemporary France. At the center of the soft tan field is a large multi-petaled flower or rosette, surrounded by rings of tiny flowers rippling outward like the surface of pond water. Small gold acanthus leaf cornerpieces complete the field. The main border adapts such acanthus leaves as a design of festoons or garlands suspended from a curtain rod. Minor borders of floral garlands and interlace flank the main one, with a neutral outer zone enclosing the entire composition. The delicate palette of golden, mauve, and cognac tones with sparing touches of mauve and black is beautifully accented by the lustrous quality of the wool pile. Both the field and the border are covered with a sprawl of rose bouquets on a golden ground. They are rendered with the life-like detail of French Aubusson or Savonnerie carpets. Only the rhythmic repetition of the bouquets in rows as an allover design betrays the underlying Oriental aesthetic of the weavers.
