Folk Art Pottery Figure. White; green; yellow; red; purple; and black. Pottery. The hand-painted man carries a burden of wood on his back in straps from his head. One hand is held up to the strap at the back of his head, the other holds a long walking stick. He stands on a rectangular platform. He wears a wide brimmed hat, V-necked shirt and cuffed pants with a long sash. The hat, stick, and burden are yellow, the face, neck hands and feet are white. The pants are purple and the shirt is spotted with purple, black and green. The sash is red as are the collar, cuffs and trim around the brim of the hat. The platform is green edged in red.   « Less

Naqada is a town on the west bank of the Nile known as Nubt in ancient Egypt. It gave its name to a pre-dynastic culture that existed in this area and other sites, stretching as far south as Nubia. Archaeologists sub-divide the period even further and ‘Naqada II’ refers to items produced c. 3500-3100 BC. During this era (also known as ‘Gerzean’) pottery production increased considerably and innovations in form, colour and technique were introduced. This reflects the increasingly complexity of society and new socio-economic conditions, such as intensified trade with groups from Western Asia. Farming became more intense and although hunting was still important, the lifestyle became more sedentary. The pottery produced in this period is characterised by the use of a pale clay, perhaps pre-worked on a hand wheel. The surface of the clay was left in its natural state and adorned with red-painted motifs of stylised people, animals, ships and geometric designs. Many of these are evocative of the flora and fauna of the Nile Valley. This particular vessel is of globular form with barrel-shaped lug handles and a flat everted rim. The decoration is applied in red-slip on a buff ground and consists of concentric circles interposed with horizontal and vertical wavy lines. Similar vessels have been found in pre- dynastic graves and once held liquids or substances for use in the afterlife. Origin: Egypt Circa: 2050 BC to 1786 BC Dimensions: 7" (17.8cm) high Collection: Egyptian Style: Middle Kingdom Medium: Terracotta This delicate cylindrical vessel belongs to a type of pottery that was produced as early as the pre- dynastic period (c. 4000-3000 BC). Fashioned from local clay, the surfaces were burnished with stones and either left in their natural state or covered with a thin layer of pigment. The two- toned effect was produced by up-ending the pot in a layer of slow-burning coals. The lack of oxygen had the effect of carbonising the surface and blackening the clay. By the Middle Kingdom period, to which this piece dates, the same effect was created by painting the upper section with a band of black slip. The vessel tapers to a point and was probably used to hold liquids, perhaps wine or oils. Such items were often placed in tombs as part of the funerary paraphernalia. (AM) - (SK.028 )   « Less
