Obverse: Helmet Head of the Goddess Athena Reverse: Nike Standing to the Left Holding a Laurel Wreath and Stylus How many hands have touched a coin in your pocket or your purse? What eras and lands have the coin traversed on its journey into our possession? As we reach into our pockets to pull out some change, we rarely hesitate to think of who touched the coin before us, or where the coin will venture to after us. More than money, coins are a symbol of the state that struck them, of a specific time and place, whether currency in the age we live or an artifact of a long forgotten empire. Worth a more than a year’s salary, a gold coin like this would have rewarded the bravery and fortitude of the officers serving under one of history’s most celebrated generals, Alexander the Great. Son to King Philip II of Macedon, tutored in his youth by Aristotle, Alexander conquered one of the largest empires the world has ever known. Marching from Egypt, through Asia Minor, and into the heart of central Asia, Alexander lead a swift and successful military campaign that defeated the potent Persians and stretched the edges of Hellenic civilization to new lands. While his vast kingdom dissolved after his death, the carefully cultivated legend of Alexander will continue to live on not only in our history books and museums, but also in artifacts like this coin: concrete remnants of ancient empires passed from the hands of civilization to civilization, from generation to generation. - (FJ.7311) « Less

Alexander the Great, son of Philip II of Macedon, is arguably the most important historical figure in the ancient world. Born on July 20th, 356 BC, he was an astute, if somewhat headstrong student, and was schooled by various famous teachers, notably Aristotle. By the time of his death at the age of 32, he had personally supervised one of the largest land- based military expeditions of all time, and had conquered the whole of the then known world from Asia Minor across the whole of Persia, Anatolia, Syria, Phoenicia, Judea, Gaza, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Bactria, parts of India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. A legend in his own lifetime, he became known as much for his excesses and cruelty as his extraordinary military prowess but was nonetheless a comparatively fair and temperate man. Perhaps due to his supposed descent from Achilles and Herakles, he essentially became deified during the Hellenistic period. The Greeks celebrated Alexander in art and song, and his legend continued under the Romans, who had a fascination with military campaigns and tactics. - (FJ.7318) « Less

Medium: Bronze and Gold
Decorated with the image of two cornucopias, this ancient coin evokes the timeless wish for peace and prosperity. Centuries ago, in Judaea, it passed hand to hand between people not so very different from ourselves. Surely they had dreams, passions, ambitions and hopes which have not died out with the ages. To wear this token of that vanished world is to link ourselves directly with the unbroken chain of human history. - (FJ.2947) « Less

Pontius Pilate, infamous in Christian history, minted this coin in the year 29/30 to honor the emperor Tiberius and his mother Livia. Its iconography, meant to appease the image- shunning citizens of Judaea, depicts a libation ladle and three ears of barley. To hold it as it was held so long ago is to open the corridors of the imagination. Was it once in the purse of someone listening to Jesus preaches? Did it pass through the hands of a witness to the crucifixion? We can never know its past for certain, but its radiant energy is tangible. - (FJ.3110) « Less

The glory of the Maccabees is evoked by this elegant coin, issued by one of the great rulers of the dynasty. On one side is the image of an anchor, symbolizing the wealth and power of trade; on the other is an eight-rayed star, evoking the divine protection of the heavens for the king. The persons who first held this coin centuries ago were witness to history in the making. To hold it today is to set the imagination traveling on exotic journeys to the past. - (FJ.3113) « Less

Minted in Ancient Israel, this coin evokes one of the most important eras in all history. Nero sat on the throne of Rome, while the young Christian faith was still being spread by men who had known Jesus personally. In Judaea, the seeds of revolt had been planted that would soon burst forth in the first Jewish war against Rome. The person who first held this coin was witness to events that changed the course of human history forever. Set in a ring of radiant gold, it links us to the unbroken chain of civilization. - (FJ.3348) « Less
