Boylston Antiques
is proud to present
A Tapestry Upholstered Black Walnut General Lee Lady Chair C. 1860-75
A chair of this design was owned by General Robert E. Lee. It is referenced and illustrated on p. 61 of Thomas Ormsbee’s “Field Guide to American Victorian Furnitureâ€. (See photo of page).
• This lady’s hoop skirt parlor chair is covered in a vintage tapestry upholstery, which is predominantly a tone-on-tone beige design of gothic arched windows and balconies with soft pink roses and green leaves, reminiscent of a manor garden. It is surrounded by beige gimp. This upholstery is in wonderful condition, with no tears or discolorations. The chair seat springs are also in great shape.
• The finger-molded crest rail is adorned with a central carving of grapes and leaves.
• The wood patina is warm, rich, and original.
• The chair stiles, arms and front legs form a continuous cyma-curve and are finished in triple-bead molding.
• The arms are open and low, to allow a lady’s hoop skirt to flow over them.
• The wooden side rails are adorned with incised carvings of leaves.
• The front seat rail has fluted molding.
• The frame is sturdy for everyday use.
• Measurements:
Crest Rail Height: 40 1/4 inches
Seat Height: 16 inches
Seat width: 17 inches
Seat depth: 17 inches
Width arm to arm: 19 ¾ inches

A classic example of a chair More »
Boylston Antiques is Proud to Offer for Sale
A Classic Boston Rocker with Black Paint & Gold Fruit & Flora Stenciling C. 1840’s
A classic example of a chair known as a “Boston Rockerâ€. Chair is black painted with gold stenciling of a footed bowl of fruit surrounded by grape leaves and floral representations.
Acanthus leaf scrolls decorate the left and right crest rail edges. The classic shape of the top rail and the acanthus leaf design indicate a date of about 1840. The stenciling appears fairly vibrant and may have been restored.
Wallace Nuttings’s Furniture Treasury has a photograph of a very similar Boston Rocker on plate # 2467. The book cover & page are reproduced below.
• The wide top crest rail has the distinctive curves on either side with a stenciled design composed of a footed bowl filled with fruit, ornamented with classical gold floral and grape leaf arabesque stenciling. Acanthus leaves are scrolled on either edge of the top rail.
• There are 6 spindles in the back and one under each arm.
• The “rolling†seat is curved up at the back and down at the front. The back curve is ornamented with classical stylized floral and leaf stencils, surrounded by a gold line. The front curve is ornamented on either side with gold leaf-form stencils.
• The arms are nicely curved to match the curve of the seat; they are left unpainted to display the wood-grain and stained.
• The front and rear stiles are pegged through the seat, as in the true Windsor chair.
• The front stile is pegged up through the arm, while the rear of the arm is pegged back through the rear stile.
• The front legs and front stretcher are turned, with gold paint highlighting the turned ring.
• The crest rail height is 39 1/4†from the floor.
• The seat sits approx. 15 1/2†from the floor.
• The seat width is approx. 19 1/2â€.
• The seat depth is approx. 17â€.
• The crest rail width at the top is 24 1/4â€.
• The length of the rockers are 28â€.
This chair is in as found condition. The surface patina is nicked and worn, as expected in a chair approaching 170 years of age. The chair is in remarkably sturdy shape, with no movement or wobble. It appears that the left arm was repaired at some point, as there is a hairline crack evident near the rear post or stile (see photo).
This chair may be picked up in Boylston, MA.
Chair may be delivered within approx. 100 miles of Boylston, MA. Email for delivery quote.
If you need the chair shipped, email for quotes.

A Grecian Scroll Arm Spindle Back Grain-Painted Caned Rocking Chair C.1880’s
This rocking chair is made of solid maple grain-painted to resemble rosewood. It has a gorgeous set of scrolled arms and a delightful serpentine-curved, grain-painted crest rail.
• Serpentine-curved Voltaire back with grain-painted maple stiles.
• The stiles continue as chair arms in curved lines to the front.
• The maple arms terminate in open hand rests in the shape of scrolls.
• While the lower back is caned, the upper back is composed of 5 turned spindles extending from the wide, serpentine-curved, rosewood grain-painted crest rail to the serpentine-curved, grain-painted mid-back slat.
• Reverse-Ogee front legs.
• Overall height is 40 7/8†from floor.
• Overall width is 21 1/2â€
• Seat depth is 19 1/4â€
• Rocker length is 31 1/4â€
• Seat and lower back are caned. This caning is in decent condition; back caning is excellent, seat caning has a slight depression and an attempted repair (see photo).
An article in the February 1973 issue of The Magazine Antiques depicts a page from the C.N. Arnold and Company catalog with an illustration of one of these rockers. Page 322 & 323 of that issue has an exposition of these Grecian rockers, along names of some of the manufacturer’s and dates when made (1879-1890’s).

A Set of 6 Chippendale Style Mahogany Needlepoint Chairs 1st Q 20th C.
A set of six Chippendale Style Mahogany Ribbon Back Dining Chairs, 5 Side and 1 Arm, with needlepoint seats.
• The 6 needlepoint seats are done in lovely complimentary patterns, each one slightly different but composing a harmonious set.
• The needlepoint background is linen white with a floral wreath motif composed of rose and green with touches of magenta, blue and yellow.
• The deep, upholstered sprung seats are padded with horsehair and studded with wide-headed upholstery nails along each chair rail.
• The mahogany frames are reasonably sturdy; the 3 back slats are pierced and carved in the famous ribbon design and exhibit a deep, rich surface patina.
• The front legs and chair rails are fluted.
• The arms of the armchair are serpentine, terminating in scrolled hand-holds.
• There is a single stretcher between the front and back legs, a single stretcher between the 2 back legs and a center stretcher between the 2 side stretchers. The center stretcher of almost all of the chairs has been considerably chewed by dog teeth.
• The crest rail height is 40†from the floor.
• The seat sits 19†from the floor.
• The seat is 22†wide.
• The seat depth is 17â€.
• The width of the arms on the armchair is 26 ¼â€.
These chairs are in reasonable condition. The surface patina is nicked and worn, as expected in chairs approaching 100 years of age. The chairs are in sturdy shape for this age of chair. The seats exhibit some discoloration. 4 of the chairs are missing the fluted front surface board on the front seat rail. 3 of the chairs are missing the left and right side fluted surface boards of the chair rails. (See photos). With the heavy upholstery, the chair rails are not very noticeable.

Boylston Antiques is Proud to Offer for Sale
An American Empire Hitchcock Chair C. 1826-1843
A black and gold painted and stenciled, rush-seated “Hitchcock†style American Empire period chair. Paint appears to be original, as much wear has occurred over the years. The rush seat is in wonderful shape.
• The turned and reeded top crest rail has the distinctive Hitchcock pillow shape in the center, once ornamented with classical gold stenciling which has largely worn off.
• The wide, curving center slat of the back has a classical gold stencil composed of pomegranates and leaves.
• The narrower, lower slat is painted with two bell flowers centered on a classical gold line adorned with triple gold balls on each side and terminating in spear points.
• The back is nicely flaired; the stiles descend in a continuous sabre arch to form the rear legs.
• The rounded stiles are flattened on the front to hold more decorative stenciling; the right stile facing has a stencil of grape leaves and a pinecone; the left front facing stencil has largely worn off.
• The legs and front stretcher are turned and reeded.
• The legs terminate in button feet.
• The crest rail height is 34†from the floor.
• The seat sits 18†from the floor.
• The seat is 18†wide at the front, narrowing to 14 ½†wide at the rear.
• The seat depth is 14 3/4â€.
• The crest rail width at the top is 16 ½â€.
This chair is in as found condition. The surface patina is nicked, worn and flaked, as expected in a chair approaching 180 years of age. The chair is in reasonably sturdy shape for this delicate style of chair.
