George IV, dated October 28 182? 182? Silkwork Sampler by Mary Langlois. Framed in an old, restored, wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, pale blue, pale green, light brown, gold, light green and dark green. Verses read ''EDUCATION> Youth like softened Wax,with Ease will> take,Those Images that first Impressions> make:If those are fair,their Actions will be> bright,If foul,they''ll clouded be with shades> of Night''. ''RELIGION> Religion prompts us to a future state,> The last Appeal from Fortune and> from fate, Where GOD''s all righteous> Ways will be declared, The Bad meet> Punishment,the Good Reward.''. Signed and dated ''Mary Langlois aged 11 October 28 182?'' (last number unstitched). The surname indicates that the stitcher was probably from the Channel Islands. A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, butterflies, stars, fruit baskets, flowers, hearts, a crown with initials ''G R'' underneath, birds and a large bowl of flowers. Good. No holes. Some pale, patchy staining around the edges, and in the centre. A couple of darker stains to the signature. Some stitch losses to the verse. Colours are somewhat faded. Slight colour run around the verse. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging. 21ins by 17.5ins wide   « Less

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry borders. Colours green, gold, pink, brown and cream. Verse reads ''The Voice that speaks Jehovah near. The still small voice I long to hear O might> it now my Lord proclaim. And fill my soul with holy shame Ashamed I must> for ever be. Verses read ''Life is the time to serve the Lord> The time t insure the great reward> And while the lamp holds out to burn> The vilest sinner may return. ''God gives us friends who seek our good> And strive to make us wise> His bounteous hand provides our food> And all our wants supplies''. Signed and dated ''Eliza Gardner Decr 20 183?''. Last number missing due to a hole. A wonderful set of motifs, including lions on plinths, a posy of flowers with a butterfly, birds, potted flowering plants, fir trees, crowns, horses, recumbent cats and stags, and shells. Fair. Many holes. Loss of ground in the bottom corners. Several stain specks. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Slight colour run around some of the olive green threads. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 14ins by 13.25ins wide   « Less

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours light brown, cream, navy blue, pale blue, dark brown and green. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Signed and dated ''Elley Chantler Finished this sampler September 21 1780''. A few motifs, including a heart, diamond and a crown. Good. No holes. A couple of patchy stains, a dark stain line down the left-hand edge, and uniform age darkening of the ground. Very minor stitch loss to one divider line and the letter ''T'' of the alphabet. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading, however the paler colours are hard to see against the ground. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven.
