This is a lovely oil on canvas board painting of the California desert. It is called ''Edge of the Desert from the San Jacinto Ranch'' by well listed artist Ralph Davison Miller (1858-1945). The painting measures 29'' wide by 19'' high unframed. Framed in a vintage gold and white frame it measures 35'' wide by 25'' high. The painting has deep craquelure consistant with having been hung over a fireplace for many years. It is in other wise good condition. A beautiful late afternoon scenic that shows the desert at rest. Watercolor by Denver Colorado artist W.G.Alfred Jones Item#8340 Circa 1880 Size: 11'' high by 9'' wide framed 7'' high by 4'' wide image only This is an landscape watercolor by W.G. Alfred Jones born in England in 1819 an died in New York in 1900. He was an engraver and painter of landscapes. He had a love of the Rocky Mountains and painted a series he called the Rocky Mountain series. They were sold through an art store located at 404 Barclay Block Denver, Colorado. The painting has a picture of the artist in his elderly years sketching in a field under an umbrella. During his life he was active and exhibited in The American Watercolor Society and The National Academy of Design. He is listed in Davenport''s, Falk''s Who''s Who in American At and Tyler''s Painters of the West. It has been on my desk for many years and would fit into any decor. A charming small painting that would make a wonderful gift. The glare on the painting is just flash back from the green silk velvet mat and the gold bullion filet. It is in excellent condition. This is a midcentury oil painting of a beachy sand dune landscape like Carmel, California. It is signed by listed European artist H. Hiersch 1918-1986. The painting exhibits some craquelure that is typical of heavily painted art. The frame is an off white antiqued with gold curvy lines. The sultry foggy painting gives the feel of a windy day at the beach with it''s moody cypress trees in motion. Very nice for decor at a beachy location. This is a charming coastal painting of the cloudy California bluffs, wildflowers and ocean. It is painted in the area of Summerland near Santa Barbara. The painting features vibrant colors in the wildflowers while the rest of the painting reflect the cloudy day. The painting is framed in a gold leaf Arts & Crafts style wide frame making it measure 20 1/2'' wide by 19'' high framed. It is from my own collection and it is in excellent condition. The painting is signed in the bottom right corner. James Dudley Slay III was born on October 2, 1953 in Jackson, Mississippi. Slay began his formal instruction at the New England School of Design. He briefly attended the Otis Art Institute in Pasadena, California. He followed this with personal tutoring from Russian impressionist Sergei Bongart. He also studied with Karl Dempwolf and Frank Serrano at the California Art Club. His specialty is painting in the plein air tradition and in his studio. His works can be found in private collections nationwide and in permanent display at the American Museum of Art in Petropavlovsk, Kamechatka Russia. He has exhibited in juried art shows across the state. Slay is listed and the Artist''s Bluebook. Herbert Sartelle Desert Landscape Item# 12263 Circa 1940 6'' by 8'' unframed framed 8'' by 10'' The artist was born in Buffalo, New York 4/24/1885. He died 10/15/1955 in Los Angeles, California. Herbert Sartelle had a colorful career having run away to the Barnam & Bailey Circus as a stage hand, set painter and magician. In 1909 he worked with Rogers and Hammerstein in New York and worked the RKO circuit. After leaving show business in the late 1920''s until his death he traveled the California state painting desert scenes and seascapes. He was a highly skilled artist who was able to capture the lupines and poppies of the purple mountains and desert plus the Monterey Peninsula. He retired in Palm Springs . His paintings appear in several books and museums. References , Artist''s in California 1780-1940 by Milton, Hughes. This is a lovely desert landscape, that Sartelle was best known for. It shows purple scrub brush of a flourishing landscape. The appears to have some dirt and would benefit from a cleaning. There is a dot of paint loss in the upper right corner and a few nicks to the original frame. It is a pretty little plein air painting which is very easy to live with and displays well.
