Rookwood Art Pottery vase in Standard glaze, artist signed ST for Sarah ''Sallie'' Alice Toohey, who worked at Rookwood 1887 - 1931. Shape 481. Measures 9 1/2 inches high. More »
Rookwood Art Pottery vase in Standard glaze, artist signed ST for Sarah ''Sallie'' Alice Toohey, who worked at Rookwood 1887 - 1931. Shape 481. Measures 9 1/2 inches high. Round body with very long neck, flaring at the top to a ruffled rim. Rim has double impressed wavy border on the inside. Ground colours are mustard/golden yellow through orange to mahogany browns. Slip decorated and enamel painted flowers, stems and foliage. Stems form a delicate pattern below flowers that are soft and creamy and deep, organic green leaves. The match between design of painting, shape and ground colours seems to be strongly influenced by Japanese art of the time. Each element subtley echoes the others. Marked underneath with impressed Rookwood mark for 1891; shape #431; experimental mark (dot); W (which apparrently indicated instruction for white glaze). Incised initials S with T through it for Sallie Toohey. Also a large impressed X, which was another of the enigmatic experimental marks. condition: good. The usual crazing for Rookwood pottery of this age. A tiny hairline/kiln crack on the rim does not detract from the piece (approx 1/4inch long). Please enquire about extra ''photos. Status: For Sale Reference#: 2981 Condition: good Year: 1890 Title: ROOKWOOD ART VASE SIGNED SARAH TOOHEY 1891 « Less

Monumental Rookwood Art Pottery ewer in the Standard glaze, artist signed Kataro Shirayamadani, possibly the most sought after of the Rookwood artists (worked at Rookwood 1887 -1911 and then 1921 - 1948). shape #387A. Date 1897. Measures 14 3/4 inches high. Circumference at widest point is about 28 inches. Very large, round body tapering to a narrow, elegant neck that flares at the top to a wide, frilly rim, very organic in shape. The body has a ground ranging from golden yellow through a warm, sunset orange to shades of brown - almost black in the darkest places. Most of the body is beautifully painted with yellow dogwood blossoms, foliage and delicate branches, very much in the Japanese taste. Subtle colouring of petals and twigs with foliage. Marked underneath with impressed Rookwood mark for 1897, shape number 387 next to A, which almost certainly refers to the large size; The artist''s full signature is also impressed and can be seen in the ''photos. Good condition. There are a few stress lines in the enamel. Please ask for additional ''photos. Victorian Staffordshire figurine of a man holding up a scrolled parchment. Made England mid to late 19th century. Measures a little over 8 inches high. Wonderfully modelled gentleman strides onto a rocky outcrop, naturalistic-looking and painted in earthy outdoors tones in big bold patches of colour. With one hand he holds aloft a scrolled document, while he looks over the other shoulder as though making a major proclamation or calling upon a crowd to hear him out. Very fine garments, beautifully hand painted with fine detail. The man might be a nobleman or an actor portraying one - possibly King John holding up the Magna Carta. Blue cloak swirls behind him, adding to the sense of movement. The vigorous action is complemented by the strong features on the unusually finely painted and modelled face. Beautifully modelled features with exceptional painting of brows, eyes, mouth and even moustache. Most of the figurine is in excellent condition, but very close observation shows a small chip on the left-hand cuff, where the hand appears to have been rejoined. Victorian parian figural group of a boy with his Spaniel dog. Made in England, 19th century. Measures approx 5 1/2 accross X 4 3/4inches high. A young boy sits on a naturalistically modelled rocky base, covered in grass and flowers. His dog, a Spaniel, licks his face. Whether they are simply playing or the boy fell is unclear. Good detail to folds of the boys clothes, really cute dog and toes. No damage to be seen, but close observation shows that the boy''s left (raised) hand was professionally restored. Moulded blue and white Delft vase. Could be made in Holland or England - both Dutch and English Delft were made at the time and are not easy to differentiate, although the painting on this item might lean towards the Engish. Dates to 18th century. Measures 7 1/4 inches high. Long, cylindrical vase flaring outwards towards the rim. Moulded form. Additional decoration in the form of delicate painting an exotic bird / peacock sits amidst a variety of branches, foliage, flowers and berries. Very delicate painting and range of blue tones. While there is typical fine crazing on a piece of this age, the vase is otherwise in very good condition. The top rim has sight roughness to the glaze (again, as one can expect), but no chips/cracks. Exceptional Toby jug character in blue and white Delft. Almost certainly made in the Netherlands. Signed TSL and dated 1750. approx 10 1/4inches high. Sits on round base. Boots, rolled/cuffed pants, a waist jacket under his coat and a nifty little tie over buttoned shirt. In one hand he holds a sack or bag of money, while another is tucked under his right boot. Clearly a man of means. The surface is magnificently painted with flowers. Fabulous detail. The face is marvellous as well - from the sideburns to the detail of lips and ears. Underneath, the piece is signed TSL and dated 1750. Condition can only be considered very good considering the age of the piece. There are a number of places (clearly shown in the ''photos), where the glaze has been worn off the porous ceramic, but there are no actual chips/cracks/restorations.
