Inscripted on the rim of this antique Japanese Zen Buddhist bronze bell is the name of the temple, Kaishoji, a zen buddhist temple in Azuchi, where Oda Nobunaga created one of Japan's foremost castle towns. Also the date of the bell is Meiji 38 October (1906). The names of the donors, all women, are also inscripted on the rim. The sound is reverberating and unending. Dating from the late Meiji Period c.1890 this antique Japanese tray with its original paulownia wood box, is an auspicious tray for celebrations. Beautifully lacquered in elegant black, the tray is decorated with treasure symbols for good luck. In the center, in maki-e raised gold is the flaming jewel 'hoju' in Japanese. This is the wish granting sacred gem. A symbol of purity and the void, it represents the promise of being released from all desire. Other lucky symbols include scrolls, an ancient gagaku flute, and dharma wheel of the law. Excellent condition. c.1890. (8" x 8") (20cm x 20cm). Rich patina tea ceremony bamboo flower basket from early 1900's. Beautiful 'susdake' smoked bamboo has been used from old Japanese farmhouses, split and woven into a piece of art. This particular basket feature a diagonal insertion technique with wide strips being inserted between plaited weaves. A 'tomobuchi' rim is employed with upward curling strips to create the rim.
