Antique porcelain perfume bottle with cavoting figures. Made 19th century, Germany or England. Measures 3 3/4 inches high. Round base with a central pillar, entirely More »
Antique porcelain perfume bottle with cavoting figures. Made 19th century, Germany or England. Measures 3 3/4 inches high. Round base with a central pillar, entirely covered with applied foliage and colourful flowers. 3 people and a dog are modelled in a continuous scene around the pillar. A chicken perches on a nest forming the cap / lid of the bottle. The scene is very likely taken from the Commedia dell'' Arte with a crouching Columbine in brightly spotted yellow sheet, the fond lover and a scurrilous knave hiding on the other side, holding his dog on a lead (Pierrot and Scaramouche ?). The extreme gestures and poses are typical of these amusing scenes. The characters are all brightly dressed with handpainted detailing & gilding to their costumes, hair and facial features. The stopper, is in the form of a chicken sitting on a nest - one wing slightly stretched out as though she is either precariously perched or shocked at the shenanigans beneath her. There is not a clear mark. There is a raised section under the base, but it is not legible. Vintage handpainted plate with portrait of a pair of dogs, believed to be Jack Russel Terriers (possibly Fox Terriers). Artist signed Jack Stanley. Made Royal WOrcester, 1929 More »
Vintage handpainted plate with portrait of a pair of dogs, believed to be Jack Russel Terriers (possibly Fox Terriers). Artist signed Jack Stanley. Made Royal WOrcester, 1929 with gold factory mark. Marketed in the USA by Sandor Decsenyi, Pasadena, CA, who seem to have specialised in outstanding English porcelain. Measures almost 10 1/2 inches in diameter. Cream coloured ground. Borders and sides are very richly decorated with raised and beaded gilding. Round, central reserve with outstanding painting of a pair of dogs in a landscape. Dogs are believed to be Jack Russel Terriers, but possibly another branch of the Terrier family. The range of colours used is very exciting - from golden yellows, through greens and browns, reds and smoky hues, to pinks, purples and blues. Details of dogs is stunning. Brush-strokes quite clear when viewed at some angles. Quality of the gilding is superior. The rim under the plate is also gilded, which is most unusual and indicates the esteem that the piece was held in. According to Henry Sandon in his book on Royal Worcester Porcelain (page 108), Jack Stanley, born 1905 was one of the foremost painters of his time. He worked at the Worcester factory between 1919 and 1933. The painting is artist signed, lower right, J Stanley. Underneath the plate are a number of handwritten marks, including HQ, Z 411 and most exceptionally, a golden Royal WOrcester mark for 1929 (the diamond under the mark indicates the year) with gold printed SANDOR DECSENYI PASADENA. CALIF. Condition is very good. THere is crazing to the glaze, normal & expected for Royal WOrcester porelain of this age. No chips/cracks/losses/wear/restoration of any sort. 3 antique Russian porcelain demitasse coffee cans / cups and saucers with handpainted Russian peasant scenes. Made in the Safronov factoroy, near Moscow circa 1830. Saucers More »
3 antique Russian porcelain demitasse coffee cans / cups and saucers with handpainted Russian peasant scenes. Made in the Safronov factoroy, near Moscow circa 1830. Saucers are approx 5 inches in diameter and 1 1/8 inches high. Cups are a little over 2 1/2 inches in diameter (excluding handle) and2 1/2 inches high. Saucers are deep enough to be used as bowls - possibly because 180 years ago people did use saucers as bowls. They are simply white porcelain with gold rims and a gold flower in the center. The cups are simple cylinders in shape. 2 have scrolling handles and one has an ear-shaped handle. Bottom and top rims + handles are gilded. Tops also gilded inside the cups. The outside of each cup is hand painted with a wonderful vignette of Russian peasants in a surrounding forest. Each scene is full of amazing action: in one a couple of youths are wrestling each other; in one a woman trudges along a path, one child hanging onto her arm, already weighed down by a basket full of produce, on her back, an enormous basket with a very big toddler sitting and lording it over the world. The 3rd cup depicts a woman in a marvellous costume being grabbed by a man in brown jacket and breeches with a big grey hat. Both wear wonderfully painted stockings, falling down over their shoes. The woman might be slapping the man for his uninvited advances. The book Russian Porcelains by Marvin Cross (page 257) claims that the Safronov factory produced pieces of the best quality - clearly these are good examples. THe porcelain itself is fine and white, with smoothe texture. The painting is outstanding. Each scene would be marvellous as a picture on the wall and all the more charming for the way they are executed. One gets a definate feel for Russian History with these scenes of ''the simple life''. The pieces are marked underneath with the blue underglaze Russian S (looks like a C with thickened edges). Inscribed squiggles / illegible writing can also be made out on most pieces. Condition is very good. Besides a small amount of wear to the gilding, there are no chips/cracks/damage/restoration of any sort. THere is a tiny scratch on the paint on the man in brown who is bothering the woman - see ''photos for magnified pictures. The Safronov factory opened in 1830 and closed early 1840''s. Antique ceramic vase with handpainted and gilded chicken / rooster, spider and web and 3-dimentional openwork foliage and berries. Made in Austria by RSTK, circa 1899 - 1900 More »
Antique ceramic vase with handpainted and gilded chicken / rooster, spider and web and 3-dimentional openwork foliage and berries. Made in Austria by RSTK, circa 1899 - 1900 and almost certainly designed by Paul Dachsel. Measures 7 inches tall. Baluster shaped vase with elongated neck. 3 wings / handles float out from the surface of the vase. The neck consists of beautifully modelled openwork, overlapping foliage and berries, one of the specialities of Paul Dachsel and RSTK. They are entirely gilded with very subtle handpainted gold detail. Their execution is quite outstanding. THe body has two wonderful vignettes hand painted and gilded in raised gold and an interesting choice of palette. On one side is a Rooster stalking through the grass. In the background are tall bushes and trees, some hinted at in pale purple, others very richly highlighted in raised gilding. The chicken is wonderfully portrayed in red, green and gold, with exotic tail feathers and tough stance. His open beak and strength of claws along with the arrogant strut, make it clear that this is not a bird to be taken lightly. Another section of the vase, with a lot of creamy ground showing, has a number of highly defined, raised flowers amongst which is a very finely painted spider''s web and nestling under one of the flying arms, a black and gold spider. The bottom of the vase has a peach and gold Art Nouveau pattern. THe vase has the burnt orange RSTK logo that dates to 1899-1900. Impressed 530 AUSTRIA and 13. Good condition.
