This antique Japanese Edo Period c.1840 red bronze utsubata flower vase is actually a Japanese proverb, "Hyotan Kara Koma". Literally, 'a horse from a gourd' meaning "the unexpected can be wonderful". The base of the vase is a wisteria wrapped gourd with an old man climbing on it. It was made so his head can move. On the underside of the top vase is a horse in raised thick bronze. Gourds are regarded as a lucky charm in Japan. Beautiful patina. c.1840. (10" x 11") (26cm x 28cm). This temple was established in Keicho 5 (1605) and was one of the Royal family`s branch temples thus the 16 petal design on the rim. In its original signed box, this wonderful antique Japanese Meiji Period, c.1890 bronze hibachi was specifically made for a tea ceremony room. The bronze was smoked in straw smoke after firing to achieve the luscious brown coloring. The bronze craftsmanship is of the highest level. On each side of the hibachi in exquisite raised relief are three different scenes framed. one, is a crane in bamboo; sparrow on a tree branch, a parakeet on a cherry branch and birds and butterflies. He was a graduate of the prestigious Tokyo Art School in 1891 winning honors as the top student and artist. He won the silver prize In the 1900 Paris World Expo. His works are in the Kyoto National Museum and the Tokyo National Museum. His son, also a bronze craftsman, is a National Treasure. Comes with wood stand. Perfect condition. c.1925. The bottom stand is on three gourd legs with raised swirling waves. The body has raised geese flying amongst pines. Geese with pines connotates 'kanraigetsu' the eigth lunar month in the old calendar - the month of the geese's return. Folk beliefs associate geese with wedded bliss.
