This antique Japanese shinto shrine plaque is from the late Meiji Period c.1890. The characters read 'Inari Jingya' (Inari Shrine). Many shinto shrines have a separate structure where Inari Daimyojin, the deity of abundant rice harvests and wealth in all forms, is worshipped. This is a rare and special Buddhist Daruma that we found in a private collection. Daruma is the revered Buddhist icon that brought dharma, the Buddhist teachings from China and India to Japan. He was so determined to reach enlightenment that he decided to sit till his legs fell off. Actually, legend has it that he fell asleep sitting so he cut his eyelids off to stay awake and they fell to the ground whereby green tea seedlings sprouted. Fired in a Hagi kiln with beautiful white glaze and fabulous features. The eyebrows alone make this piece a must. Absolutely a museum piece. c.1880. (16" x 8") (41cm x 20cm). This vintage Japanese bamboo flower basket is signed by one of the true masters of the art, Buseki Suishin. He was born in 1888 and died in 1983. At age 12 he studied under the 'god' of the Japanese basket golden age, Iizuka Hosai I. Established his own studio later on in Tokyo where he won numerous prizes including at the 1922 Ministry of Commerce Expo and prizes in 1934 and 1936. He is featured in "Bamboo Masterworks : Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection. Slight break on one of the bottom legs but unseen unless you look underneath. c.1935.
