William IV, dated May 1st 1837 Large 1837 Sampler by Anne Gronshaw. Framed in an old wood frame with glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours pinks, cream, red, pale blue, gold, black, olive green, grey and dark green. Verses read ''How few and evil are thy days> Man of a Woman born> Trouble and peril haunt thy ways> Forth like a flower at noon> And dost thou look on such an one> Will god to judgment call> A worm for what a worm hath done> Against the lord of all> Man lieth down no more to wake> Till yonder arching sphere> Shall with a roll of thunder break> And nature disappear> Oh hide me till thy wrath be past> Thou who canst kill or save> Hide me where hope may anchor fast> In my redeemers grave''. Signed and dated ''Ann Gronshaw may 1st 1827''. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a large building, possibly Solomon''s Temple, angels, flowers, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, fir trees, trees, a church and birds. Generally Good. A number of holes and some thinning of the ground. A few pale, patchy stains and slight uniform age darkening of the ground. Minor stitch losses to the signature, date and a couple of the motifs. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. William IV, dated 1835 Large 1835 Sampler by Jane Ingham. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with glass. Stitched to card with paper backing. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours red, cream, blue, light brown, white, black, light green, orange, olive green and pink. Verse reads ''Jesus stands with open arms> Inviting sinners home> His voice contains a thousand charms> And every charm says come''. Signed and dated ''Jane Ingham''s Work 1835.''. A good set of motifs, including a large building with gatehouses, possibly Solomon''s temple, flanked by trees, birds, flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, fruit trees, figures and potted flowering plants. Generally Good. One hole to the left hand edge. Some plucks to the ground in places. Stain at the bottom of the sampler. Very minor stitch loss to a couple of the potted flowering plant motifs. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Colour run around the verse and signature. Stretching is slightly uneven. The sampler is worked in wool, with a small amount of silk, on canvas ground, in backstitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, blue, light brown, dark brown, pink, light green, red and cream. Signed and dated ''Jane Clarkson Work 1856''. A good set of motifs, including a red brick house with a garden, farm animals, sheep grazing on the lawn and two swans in a pond, fruit trees, fir trees, a large flower basket, potted flowering plants, butterflies and flowers. Good. Old tack holes with staining around the edge. A few light stains and specks elsewhere. Minor stitch losses to the swans, pond and bottom of lawn. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. Very slight colour run around the signature threads. Unevenly stretched. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border, and divider lines in various patterns. Colours red, cream, yellow, green, pale blue, light brown, copper, light green, white and black. Verses read ''Thee I can love and thee alone> With pure delight and inward bliss> to know takst me for thine own> O what a happiness is this''. ''Nothing on earth do I desire> But thy pure love within my breast> This only this will I require> And freely give up all the rest''. ''Seek virtue and of that possest . Henceforth to God resign the rest''. Signed and dated ''Hannah Browns work finished August 8th 1833''. A wonderful set of motifs, including large potted flowering plant, flowers and birds. Good. No holes. A few stains and slight patchy staining of the ground. Some stitch losses to the top line of the border and the large central flower motif. The samplers are worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Zig zag border. Colour is black throughout. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-12. Verse on Mary Cotton''s sampler reads ''Study with care Politeness, that must teach> The modish forms of gesture and of speech;> In vain formality, with matron mien,> And pertness ape her with familiar grin.> They against nature for applauses strain,> Distort themselves, and give all others pain:> She moves with easy, tho; with measur''d pace,> And shews no part of study but the grace.''. Inscription reads ''To recollect a wellspent life, is to anticipate> the bliss of a future existence.''. Small stain to the top line of the verse. Slight discolouration of the ground in the top left half. Small stitch loss to one of the divider lines, and some of the losses in the divider lines have been re-stitched. Lucy Cotton: A few small holes. A number of stains and specks.
