A stunning pair of Nio figures that are carved in a most masterful manner. Covered with lacquer and slightly faded with time this pair makes a statement for even the most advanced collection of Buddist Shinto items. Amazing quality. Look closely and you will be amazed with the striking poses and detail. Circa 1850 and true masterpieces. Condition is very good with only a couple of minor age splits on back as testament to their age. They stand a fit 8'' tall and are unique in every sense of the word. The Nio (Benevolent Kings) are a pair of protectors who stand guard outside the temple gate at most Japanese Buddhist temples, one on either side of the entrance. In Japan, the gate itself is often called the Nio-mon (literally Nio Gate). Their fierce and threatening appearance wards off evil spirits and keeps the temple ground free of demons and thieves. In some accounts, the Nio were said to have followed and protected the historical Buddha when he traveled throughout India. They have since been adopted by the Japanese into the Japanese Buddhist pantheon. Each is named after a particular cosmic sound. The open-mouthed figure is called ''Agyo,'' who is uttering the sound ''ah,'' meaning birth. His closed-mouth partner is called ''Ungyo,'' who sounds ''un'' or ''om,'' meaning death. Other explanations for the open/closed mouth include: (1) mouth open to scare off demons, closed to shelter/keep in the good spirits; (2) ''Ah'' is the first letter in the Sanskrit alphabet and ''Un'' is the last (same in Japanese syllabary too), so the combination symbolically represents all possible outcomes (from alpha to omega) in the cosmic dance of existence. Circa 1900 Chinese cabbage or Bok Choy Vases measuring 9'' in across. Marked Guangxu and of the period. Bok Choy is not normally Chinese export but is a pattern that the Chinese made for themselves. It resembles the Chinese Export pattern of cabbage leaf very closely. The slight difference is there is more white in bok choy. But many cabbage leaf collectors have started adding bok choy to their cabbage leaf collection. This bowl and stand are in very good condition. reat matched pair of 5 toed Dragons. THe 5 toes on a ceramic piece seem to indicate a Imperial article. Could be a Kang Hsi piece but more likely late 18th Century. A beautifully painted pair the color and style is quite lively. Both are 16.5'' across and remarkably damage free. Circa 1780. The legend of the five toed dragon came from a rich and powerful landlord who had two giant dragons perched atop the perimeter wall of his mansion. When this news was brought to the attention of the imperial guards, the court ordered it to be removed, failing which the landlord will have to face the punishment of execution in public. The feudal lord sought the advise of a brave and witty advisor. His argument that the imperial dragon had five claws wheras the dragon of his master had four claws and as such they were different. The feudal landlord was finally pardoned and allowed to retain his two dragons. Since that day, dragon motifs with three claws or four claws can be use by ordinary folks.
