Her elaborate hair-do is enhanced by a fern as well. She is not wearing any jewelry, which is indeed unusual for this period. She has a pleasant and charming face. Conger Metcalf (American, 1914-1998), studied at Stone City Art Colony with Grant Wood, at Coe College with Marvin Cone (where he received an Honorary Doctorate in 1964), and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with Alexandre Iacovleff and Karl Zerbe. He received the Tiffany Foundation Prize to study in NY, and was a Museum of Fine Arts Paige Traveling Scholar. In his late 20s, he traveled to Italy and Paris and studied the Old Masters. He was admitted to the Copley Society in 1954. He is represented at the Boston Atheneum; the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA; Cedar Rapids Art Center in MI, and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA.This beautiful 3/4 profile of a pensive mime is a superb example of this artist's work. Pencil, watercolor, and gouche on paper. It is matted in beige silk and mounted under glass in a handsome gold leafed wood frame. The paper dust cover bears the original labels from Gump Galleries in San Francisco and from the Margaret Brown Gallery at 280 Dartmouth Street in Boston. Oil painting on canvas portrait of a young man with a mustache, wearing a stiff collar and red bow tie, circa 1900, by either Fannie (1858-1931) or Jennie (1872-1961) Burr. Fannie and her younger sister, Jennie, both artists, were born into Monroe, CT's most prominent family. Their father was a very successful farmer. Although the 2 sisters were 14 years apart, they were very close. They began drawing when children. Each attended and graduated from Mt Holyoke College and the Yale School of Fine Arts. After that, Fannie studied at the Art Students League in NYC. These accomplishments were very rare for a young woman in those days. List in Who Was Who in American Art by Peter Falk. Exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art New Britain CT. Catalogue of work produced by The Connecticut Gallery Inc. This painting was acquired directly from an heir to the estate. Image is 12.5" x 15.5"; frame is 15.75" x 18.75". One of a pair. Signed Burr on back. Painted in 1898.

The Dutch/Belgian artist Adolphe Alexandre Dillens produced mainly genre works after completing his studies at the academy in Ghent. He was inspired by scenes from everyday life in Zeeland and also by folk tales. His works are characterized by his clear compositions and use of rich colours and detail. The genre scene paintings by Dillens sell for over 20,000 US$ and are sold in US art galleries for even many many more. This genre scene " couple in love with dog, a Papillon dog" is superb, not cleaned, in the original state as it came from the estate. Signed lower left " A Dillens". Dimensions: the original 19th frame: 21.7" x 18.1" ( 55 x 46 cm) the painting: 13.2" x 9.8" ( 33.5 x 25 cm)
