According to an expert in 19th century paintings and drawings at Bonhams, this beautifully-detailed pen and ink drawing was executed by F. O. Gallagher, who was known to have contributed to The Dome (an illustrated magazine and review of literature, music, architecture and the graphic arts, published in London 1897-1900) and The Studio (a late 19th century Arts & Crafts magazine). This was probably the original artwork for a book or magazine illustration. Signed lower right. The measurements given below are for the framed piece; the image size is 11 3/4" x 5 3/4". « Less

Offered is a beautiful little drypoint litho by Jerome Myers (American, 1876-1940). This is a very good example of the kind of work in which Myers specialized -- the immigrant experience in turn-of-the-century America. His paintings can be found in such places as the National Gallery in Washington, D. C., among works of George Wesley Bellows and other well-known members of the Ashcan school. Pencil signed, lower right. Measurements below are for the framed piece; image size is 9 1/4"h. x 6 3/4"w. « Less

Probably late 18th century
This charming study, titled "L'Escarpolette", or "The Swing", may date to the time of Jean-Honore Fragonard, who in 1767 was commissioned to create a painting of the same name. The work offered here, in watercolor, ink and pencil, bears pencil notations below the title that say,"XVIII Seicle (18th century)" and "Louis XV" (who ruled France until his execution in 1774). « Less

Probably American
Probably late 18th century
This be-wigged gentleman, probably American but perhaps English, is identified on the reverse, but no further information has been found. Painted in oil on linen canvas, the work is attached to the hand-cut stretcher frame with what appear to be hand-made nails (see detail shot). The large wooden "keys" securing the stretcher lead us to believe it's American. Unframed, no discernible signature. « Less

David Rose (American, 1910-2006) was an artist who, early on, worked for such animation studios as Walt Disney and Warner Brothers. During WW II he worked in the Armed Forces Motion Picture Unit, which made propaganda films and cartoons. His greatest fame came from the 23 years -- from 1973-1996 -- that he spent as a courtroom artist during some of the most notorious trials of the late 20th century, including those of Roman Polanski, Patty Hearst, Rodney King, John DeLorean, and Klaus Barbie. Most of his work is held in archives at USC and UCLA. Measurements below are for the framed piece. The image size is 9 1/2"h. x 6 3/4"w. « Less
