This early piece, a woodblock print, was created in 1966 or 1967, and the subject was the poet Dylan Thomas. A professor emeritus of printmaking and drawing at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, he has had over 40 solo exhibitions and more than 80 competitive, invitational and group exhibitions, both in the U.S. and internationally -- in Japan, Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Yugoslavia, Italy and England. USA 1967 Born in Romania in 1895, Harry Gottlieb became an important 20th century American artist. At the end of WW I, involved with the Provincetown Players Theatre Company of New York, he met the young platwright Eugene O'Neill and designed the sets for some of his first performances. A social realist, he was one of the premier artists to be honored with a one-man show at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, which still holds one of the best collections of Gottlieb's paintings, drawings and prints. Gottlieb was a founding member of both the W. P. A. and the Artists' League of America. This work is rendered in ink, with watercolor wash; the hand-carved frame is believed to have been made by the artist. Germany 1904, printed after 1931 Kathe Kollwitz (German, 1867-1945) is regarded as one of the most important German artists of the 20th century (a great deal of information about her is available online - www.kaethe-kollwitz.de/ , for example). She began producing etchings in 1880, and from 1898-1903 she taught at the Berlin School of Women Artists. It is believed that this work - the original of which was created in 1904 - is from the von der Becke edition, printed between 1965 and 1972 from the original plates.
