Israeli artist Naftali Bezem abstract oil on canvas. The central figure is a woman. Also within the grid are beach tents, candlesticks, a branch, and a portrait medallion of a male figure. Painted circa 1950. The original paper label of the Bineth Gallery of Fine Arts, 14 King David Street, Jerusalem, is affixed to the back. The painting measures 29 by 36 and one half inches."Born in 1924 in Essen, Germany, Bezem then emigrated to Israel at the age of fourteen, before the outbreak of World War II. A member of the vibrant generation that built the state of Israel, his early adolescence was spent under Nazi oppression, in refugee camps and in constant fear for the safety of his parents, who died in Auschwitz. This personal history largely shaped his artistic style and work. Bezem views art as an expression of the soul of a people, its heritage, and its truth. He has won several prestigious prizes, has been shown internationally in group and solo exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennale. A fascinating book has been published about Jon Schueler and his work titled "The Sound of Sleat", edited by Magda Salvesen and Diane Cusineau, published by Picador, New York. Schueler was taught by Clyfford Still and Willem de Kooning, among others. Please see Who Was Who in American Art, page 2941, for an extensive biography of the artist. Leo Calapai Under the Big Top etching. This etching by "Leo Calapai" is entitled " Under The Big Top" and measures 6 by 8 and three quarter inches. This etching is very well mated and framed. The frame measures 17 and one half by 13 and one half inches. Born Letterio Calapi in Boston in1904 to Sicillain parents. Died 1993. There was a retrospective catalog published on the artist in 1994. (Letterio Calapai a 50 Year Retrospective (1934- 1984).Chicago Landfall Press, 1984) More information on the artist can be found at Reference Department Archives of American Art Smithsonian Institution Washington. D.C. 20560 . (In 1928, Calapai moved to New York and worked in a lithography shop while taking drawing classes at the Art Students League and sculpture classes at the Beaux Art Institute of Design. Some time in the mid 1930s, Charles Hopkinson, an old professor, proposed that Calapai work only part-time and focus on his art work. Hopkinson offered to compensate him for the money he did not earn as a result. Calapai henceforth directed his attention entirely to printmaking. Experimenting with wood and metal engraving techniques, he made prints of rural and urban landscapes.He founded and chaired the Graphic Arts Department of the Albright Art School in Buffalo, NY (1949 - 1955), taught at the New School for Social Research (1955 - 1962), established the Intaglio Workshop for Advanced Printmaking in New York, and taught at various other universities and colleges.
