Antique Silk Kashan Carpet, Persia, late nineteenth century - A lush profusion of flowering vines reminiscent of the best Kashmir shawls spreads elegantly across the field of this exquisite antique silk Kashan rug from Central Persia. The vines are contained by the contours of the ogival central medallion in magenta and blue and by the pale aqua cornerpieces that all articulate the field into different areas. The magenta ground border adapts the vine motif to a framing format that beautifully resolves and caps the entire composition with a unified coloration and design texture.

Antique Silk Heriz from Northwest Persia, mid nineteenth century All silk antique Heriz carpets are famously unusual for utilizing designs and color schemes radically different form the customary Heriz production in wool. This sumptuously elegant example has an allover Mina Khani pattern surrounding a small central quatrefoil medallion. The border is exceptional with its repeating pattern of birds flanking trees of life. The border continues the lovely coloration of the field - celadons, greens, pale golds, and red, which comes across especially well because of the lustrous silk pile.

The design is reserved graphically, with only three medallions, small cornerpieces and several floral spays in the open pale tan field. The spareness of the design heightens the effect of the rich coloration of these forms in brick, blue, and goldenrod, colors which recur in the cloud and volute border. Pictorial Rug, Ecuadorian, early 20th century Some rugs are as puzzling as they are spectacular. The weave of this carpet is remarkably similar to Chinese examples, although the subject matter is purely South American or Argentine. A great circular array of hunters on horseback and on foot move in on their quarry - ostriches and wildcats or pumas. Those who chase the ostriches look like the famous gauchos of the Argentine pampas The drawing is decidedly modern, at once abstract and yet ornamental, in the manner of Chagall. The latter effect is heightened by the pastel palette of reds, lavender, pink, cinnamon, and grey on a pale cream-yellow field.
