Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the century. As a struggling and relatively unknown artist of Czech origin living in Paris, Mucha achieved immediate fame when, in December 1894, he accepted a commission to create a poster for one of the greatest actresses of this time, Sarah Bernhardt. Though the printer was apprehensive about submitting Mucha«s final design because of its new unconventional style, Bernhardt loved it and so did the public. «Le style Mucha«, as Art Nouveau was known in its earliest days, was born. The success of that first poster brought a 6 years contract between Bernhardt and Mucha and in the following years his work for her and others included costumes and stage decorations, designs for magazines and book covers, jewellery and furniture and numerous posters. Mucha was much sought after by both private and public clients, and he produced many magazine covers and illustrations, like this one for the Habitation Pratique.   « Less

Fabulous and very Art Deco, this Charming and colorful advertisement was originally exhibited as a point-of-sale marketing tool (you can tell this by noting the small hole punched in the middle of the top of the piece where the store owner would have strung some twine through to be able to hang the piece in his store or store window). This maquette would be lovely in a kitchen, country home or gallery. It was used by a company called MBG which made shoe and boot covers, called guetres in French. This ad claims that the MBG products preserve shoes and boots from the rigors of winter, and is signed by Arthur Theo. Dirk. Ready to be shipped, it is printed on hard card stock and is in very good condition - some foxing on the bottom of the piece, along the image line and to its extreme bottom edge - not affecting the image and not surprising considering its age. Journal des dames et des modes/Les Parfums Floreine (circa 1912-1914) Journal des Dames et des Modes: began publishing in 1912 and Barbier was made the principal illustrator for two of them. the Journal des Dames et des Modes lasted only two years until 1914.The Journal des Dames et des Modes was a luxury magazine for an exclusive clientele; only 1279 copies of each issue were printed. The magazine appeared three times a month. The text part of each number filled eight pages and consisted of belles lettres - aphorisms, fashionable poetry, fashion notes and the like - written by pillars of tout Paris...Anatole France, Jean Cocteau and the Comtesse de Noailles. Georges Dola (1872-1950) was a masterful posterist specializing in opera posters. La Teresina was created in 1929, is linen backed, measures 23.5 x 31 and is in excellent condition. Produced for an operetta in three acts, from an adaptation by Mrs. Leon UHL and Jean Marietti with Music by Oscar Strauss, the poster was printed by Max Eschig & Company in Paris in 1927. It is signed in the stone by the artist, and we particularly like the shadow of Napoleon in the wagon''s interior.
