Victorian, dated 1844 1844 Silkwork Sampler by Eliza Caroline Pardoe. Framed in a modern maple frame with cream mount card and glass. Fixed to linen with chipboard backing. The sampler is very finely worked in silk on silk ground, in a variety of stitches. No border. Colours red, gold, pale green and copper. Verse entitled ''On the Sacrament'' reads ''The doleful might before his death> The lamb for sinners slain> Did almost with his latest breath> The solom feast ordain> To keep thy feast Lord are we met> And so remember thee> Help each poor sinner to repeat> For me he died for me> Thy sufferings Lord each sacred sign> To our remembrance brings> We eat the bread and drink the wine But think on nobbler things> Oh tune our voices and inflame> Our hearts with love to thee> That each may gratefully proclaim> My saviour died for me''. Signed and dated ''Eliza Caroline Pardoe 18 Her work 44''. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including potted flowering plants, roses, birds and fruit trees. Good. A few small holes and pulling along the right edge. A few pale stains. Minor stitch losses to the word repeat. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours black, cream, yellow, light brown, light blue and green. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-12. Inscription reads ''REmemBeR noW> THY CReATOR In THY> DAYS OF THY YOuTH> SERVe GOD AnD Be> CHeARFuLL''. Signed and dated ''ELISABeTH HAYCOCK 1768'' the last number of the date is stitched in a different color, so could have possibly been stitched at a later date. Three crown motifs. Good. No holes. Slight pulling of ground in one place. Three stain specks to the edge of the sampler. No stitch losses, a couple of loose stitches. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads ''Jesus Lover of my soul> Let me to thy bosom fly> While the billows near me roll> While the tempest still is high> Hide me O my Saviour hide> Till the storm of life is past> Safe into the haven guide> O receive my sould at last''. Signed and dated ''Margaret Monningtons Work 1850''. A good set of motifs, including a fir tree, stars, a dog, birds, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, blossoming trees, hearts, a squirrel eating a nut and butterflies. Generally Good.
