This large room-sized rug produced in the Khorassan region between northeast Iran and modern-day Afghanistan features an all-over pattern of staggered cypress trees and bird-flanked trees surrounded by a Lotto-esque border. In addition to cypress trees that reflect eternal life, each motif is surrounded to two good luck birds flanking a tree to symbolize happiness. Overall, the carpet reflects a surprising Anatolian influence with the addition of highly-detailed designs inspired by the Safavids and Moughals, who surround the Khorassan region.

Woven in Egypt under imperial Ottoman Turkish rule, “Cairene†carpets are among the rarest and most luxurious carpets of the classical period. Although made for high-level Turkish patrons, the style of such Cairene carpets is strongly Persianized. Nazmiyal has aquired this piece with its gently scalloped circular central medallion with interlaced arabesque scrolls on a blue ground in a larger scalloped red-ground medallion with paired wavy forms at the far ends of the field. The intervening space is graced with sinuous tendrils, many of which hang in a lilting sickle shape - an early form of the so-called ‘Herati’ pattern. The border has an exquisite arabesque vinescroll set against a rich red ground in a framing contrast to the dominant greens and blues of the field with interlaced lotus blossoms, palmettes and rosettes. The central field features repeating floral clusters with curved serrated leaves on a pale green ground of this superb carpet is superb, a fitting complement to the perfection of its drawing. This piece has been deaccessioned by the Tryon Palace Commission. Publications: Arthur Urbane Dilley, Oriental Rugs and Carpets, J.B. Lippencott, 1959, Plate XLV. Walter B. Denny, Journal of Islamic Art, Vol. I, Yale University Press, 1983, pp. 103-122. Gregor Norman-Wilcox, Antiques Magazine, April 1959, pp. 366-374. Bakshaish (Bakhshaish or Bakhshaysh), late nineteenth century- This magnificent allover Bakshaish is unusual for its allover composition. But the majestic field composition of interlacing arabesques is incomparable on its own terms for the sheer power and beauty of its drawing and soft colors set beautifully against the pale camel ground. The final touch is the fine, detailed, lace-like as a complement and contrast to the monumental graphics of the field. If superior quality involves uniqueness as well as skill and taste, this is a masterpiece.

Antique Chinese Carpet, 19th centuryThis lovely piece embodies all the grace and reserved formality of classical Chinese court carpets. Five scalloped openwork dragon medallions float within a mostly open field, surrounded by fretwork and vinescroll borders, and an outer border filled sparely by circular and cruciform motifs. The palette is restricted to blue details and outlines set against a tan ground. The lustrous, velvety pile is all the more impressive within this carefully controlled color scheme. Though classically Chinese, the reserved design and palette are well suited to contemporary taste and décor.

Antique Kerman, Persia, early twentieth centuryOn this elegant antique Kerman a cartouche-like medallion with finials hovers amidst a grand architectural border whose arch-like indentations echo the form of the medallion on a larger scale. Delicate vinescrolls float around the medallion in the intervening space. Two additional zones occupy the field at either end of the carpet, each containing cartouches in the form of the field, but turned sideways. Additional vines fill the outermost section of the borders system. The pale, two-tone palette, the architectural quality of the borders, and the naturalism of the floral detail all reflect the impact of the great Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets produced in France, although the interlocking structure of the end panels may owe something to Persian miniature painting as well. Altogether an extraordinary carpet.

Antique Kerman Long Carpet from Central Persia , circa 1900A veritable jungle of flowering vines, ferns, and palmettes in soft gold and blue sprawls in symmetry across the deep navy field of this sumptuous antique Kerman. A richly detailed vine scroll border with similar design on a finer scale, comprises the border in reverse tonality, blue on gold. Despite the lavish density of the design, the overall effect of the piece is still stately and reserved, owing to the cool, restricted coloration and the gentle controlled rhythms of the vines.

Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth century A lavish design of strapwork vines and palmettes in rich shades of red and saffron repeats in allover symmetry across More »
Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth century A lavish design of strapwork vines and palmettes in rich shades of red and saffron repeats in allover symmetry across the deep navy field of this sumptuous antique Persian Sultanabad. The vines are carefully configured into shield-like forms to create a latent design of staggered medallions amidst the complex patterning. Tiny ivory floral elements fill the intervening spaces in a delicate millefiori effect. In contrast to the miniscule detail of the field, the border utilizes a design of grandly lush palmettes, while retaining the color scheme of the field for a larger, unified visual harmony.
