Antique Persian Tabriz carpet, Last quarter, 19th centuryWoven entirely in silk, this magnificent Tabriz preserves the great Persian tradition of garden carpets. The cruciform scheme, subdivided further into smaller rectangular frames follows classical Persian formal landscape design. The trees and shrubberies within the latter represent the actual components of the garden. Some of the small frames, however, contain mihrabs of prayer niches, reminding us that this is not just any garden, but a vision of paradise. The extremely soft palette of blues, saffron, and terracotta duly complements the fine detail and silk material of the carpet.

Antique Khorassan, Persia, circa 1900 A dazzlingly complex design of cartouche-like medallions and quatrefoils linked by finely proportioned flowering vines sprawls across the champagne field of this sumptuous antique Khorassan. The many tiny flowers function collectively like a classic Persian 'millefleurs' design, but within this complex mesh one can make out a larger, more subtle arrangement of figure -eights that governs the distribution of various vines. This underlying subtlety teases and entices the viewer to explore the richness of the design. A classical Persian palmette border on a terra cotta ground provides a pleasing closure to the overall decorative effect.

The design is carefully worked so as to produce the secondary effect of staggered intersecting ovals. Outlined only by slightly darker minor borders, a lush vinescroll main border preserves the same coloration as the field, giving the entire composition a highly decorative, unified impression. The lustrous wool plays off beautifully against the soft color and subtle design.

Despite its enormous complexity and variation, the design is symmetrical and balanced, with an air of dignified formality. The main border is composed of different elements, large burgundy rosettes set on a deep blue ground. Although this reverses the palette of the field, it still maintains a harmonious unity with it.
