Quite exceptional murashi-do bronze hibachi in the original box signed and dated Taisho Period 11 April (c.1922). Heavy red bronze was used and when the bronze is red hot it is dipped in hot oil to achieve the mottled colorations of the metal. This exceptionally elegant antique Japanese 'rankauhari' white lacquered vanity box employs a rare white lacquer made form crushed quaill egg shells. Copies of this lacquering technique not using crushed egg shells will fade over time. This piece made in early Taisho Period c.1910 as a geisha's vanity box, still has the lovely original color and 'kagamakie' a sought after makie technique of raised gold pictures encased in fans and and circles on all sides in black and gold. All the auspicious symbols for good fortune and longevity: swallows and plum, cranes and pines, butterflies and rivers, peonies in raised gold. Exceptional Taisho Period c.1925 bronze flower vase with a koi (carp) swimming up a waterfall symbolizing courage and determination. On the opposite side are the Japanese characters, 'Ken & To' in raised relief, meaning to persist and challenge. The vase is signed by Minobe and was most likely commissioned as a gift for someone facing a challenging journey or task. The upper kanji 'Ken' has a tiny light scratch in the upper left stroke as well as the area above it, but imperceptable to the camera and basically the eye. Ask for shipping quote. This is a fantastic antique Japanese Edo Period c.1780 educational encyclopedia for women with explicit pictures and text detailing all the things an Edo Period woman would need to know to be successful and a good housewife. Everything from the 'Hyakunin Isshu' or hundred poems that every well bred woman would be expected to know to sections on tea ceremony, the right incense, how to make kimonos, 'ohaguro' the art of blackening one's teeth and shaving eyebrows after marriage to lessons on high and low tides. Every page is calligraphy or pictures carved into woodblocks and then woodblock printed, a mind boggling venture.
