44488 Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth century - With an open medallion design more characteristic of Senneh or Malayer carpets, this stately antique Sultanabad is quite distinctive and outstanding. A grand diamond medallion sprouts finials nearly as large, all set against an open, deep navy field whose hexagonal form is defined by triangular cornerpieces. The main ivory-ground border of amphorae sprouting flowers is simply incomparable. Additional minor borders of running vinescrolls supply an extra supporting touch. The medallion is framed by cornerpieces made up of swirling vines, while sprays of flowers serve as finials at its upper and lower ends. A welter of flowering vines fills the intervening areas. Antique Kerman Persian Rugs by Master Aboul Ghasem Kermani, late nineteenth century - On this elegant antique Kerman prayer rug, made by the 'master of masters,' Aboul Ghasem Kermani, a graceful tree of life climbs gently heavenward, its branches filled with flowers, fruit, and exotic feeding birds, while a snaky dragon slithers up the trunk. An ornamental arch or mihrab with flowering spandrels crowns the composition. A design of trees and flowering branches filled with birds makes up the borders, nicely continuing the imagery of the field. The gentle, warm palette with earth tones complemented by soft shades of green and red sets off the delicacy of the design to great effect.
