Unique Pair of French Art Deco Sconces Circa 1935 The outward design elements, i.e. the amber glass shade and copper finished sconce frames, are original. The frame is copper finished, and formed from sheet metal. The significant beauty of these sconces are the shades. So typical of French Art Deco...they have a deeply embossed floral design and a wide presence. The amber shades are in remarkable condition and just lovely. ANT-511 Nice Pair of French Circa 1935 Art Deco Slip Shade Sconces Very nice frame design, which is nickel plated. Very nice amber shades, which are in simply great condition for their age. Simple, but elegant, and an iconic motif for the Art Deco period. When received, these sconces had French sockets which were changed in our UL shop to standard American sockets. Therefore, we have totally re-wired these sconces in our UL shop with American medium base sockets and new supply wire. They do not, and never did, have switches, since that is not necessarily a French custom. We changed the mounting as well. The sconces now mount to a standard American electrical box with a standard American crossbar, which will be supplied. Measurements: Height: 10 ½" overall, measured from the top of the shade to the bottom of the frame. ANT-536 Pair of Nice Art Deco Slip Shade Sconces Attributed to Mid-West Mnf. of Kansas City We have attributed these lovely sconces to Mid-West, as they match chandeliers in our museum which are linked to Mid-West Mnf. Attribution of the museum chandeliers was an easy link. Mid-West worked mostly in bronze metal until later in the Depression...and the chandeliers in the museum are bronze. More important though, is that identical finials and canopies were used, as on other documented production work, so the use of common parts was the defining link. While the metal of these sconces is not bronze, they are still finely executed in the casting metal of the times. As seen, the finish is a dark high/lo pewter look, and the details are very pronounced. Mid-West was known for their high casting skills. The slip shades are in excellent condition, and of the nicest amber color. The sconces have been re-wired in our UL lighting shop with new sockets and new switches. The socket is well capable of handling 100 watt bulbs...but...we would recommend lower wattages to protect the antique shades. We used only 11 watt bulbs to take the pictures, and it yields a nice decorative effect. All mounting hardware will be supplied. ANT-539 Pair of Art Deco Slip Shade Wall Sconces by Globe Globe Lighting Fixture Mfg Co. was located in Brooklyn, NY on 7th Avenue and 12th Street. They were not as big as companies like Lincoln or Markel, but they did make some very interesting (and uniquely different) Art Deco lights...and now...harder to find Art Deco lights. These sconce frames are cast iron frames that have been nickel plated. This makes a significant contrast between the bright nickel plated metal and the amber shades. Striking indeed. These sconces have been completely re-wired, in our UL shop, with new sockets and rotary switches. Sockets can easily handle 100 watts. If using incandescent light bulbs, we do recommend using a maximum of 60 - 65 watts to limit heat exposure to the slip shades. If greater light output is needed, compact fluorescent and LED lights are good substitutions. Their greater efficiency means the bulk of the electricity consumed goes to light emission, and much less is wasted as heat. ANT-551 Art Deco Pair of Wide Slip Shade Wall Sconces by Markel A neat pair of Art Deco sconces made by Markel, Buffalo, NY in the mid 30s. These are shown in their catalog of 1936, and are part of the 9900 group. This sconce was stock numbered 9911. Markel's catalog described this group as: A Markel Presentation in Classic Modern Designing. Naturally, this was modern in the 1930s. Now, totally classic! Cast iron metal backplates with a pewter finish paired with lovely amber WIDE shades. These are an unusual slip shade pair of sconces that gives a nice widespread lighting affect. Measurements: * Height: 10 ¼" from the top of the shade to the bottom of the backplate. * Width: 8 ¼" (maximum) * Projection: 7 ¼" These sconces have been completely re-wired in our UL shop with new sockets, and replacement rotary switches nearly identical to the original ones. A nice pair of Art Deco sconces made by Virden, and pictured in their catalog of 1931. Virden called this series: The Berkeley Line. There were chandeliers with various support types, but only one wall sconce, and it was this one. It was stock numbered 1401. This pair of nice sconces are finished in an Art & Crafts style of pewter, but have an air of Gothic to them while still remaining Deco. This design crossed a few decorative motifs. The shades are amber, and in good...remarkable...condition. Measurements: * Height: 11" overall, measured from the top of the shade to the bottom of the backplate. * Width: 6 ¼" (maximum) * Projection: 4 ½" from the wall into the room. These sconces have been completely re-wired in our UL shop with new sockets and rotary switches. Authentic Art Deco, slip shade, mixed metals, 5 light chandelier circa 1936-38. The finish, while being cleaned up a mite, is original and pleasant. Wonderful condition. The shades are simply a treat, and in remarkable condition. This is the larger slip shade made during the later part part of the Art Deco slip shade era. Its purpose was to allow bigger bulbs and more light spread from those made just a couple of years before, which had size limitations. All the Art Deco makers got into this scoop shade profile. They varied the design of the bowl a bit, so telling them apart is not very easy, since at first glance they all look so similar. This version has a nice, clean edge, with a ribbed bottom section. But it is interesting to note how the center rib of the shade matches the ribbed column and ceiling canopy. This is more a Streamline fixture due to these simplistic elements. Measurements: * Height: 23" overall. * Diameter: 18 ½" This fixture can be lengthened by adding chain links. Please contact us for pricing. The metal frame is nicely finished in a pewter finish, which contrasts beautifully with the amber shades. There are the odd places that wear does show, which is consistent with age...but overall, a rather nice chandelier. Interesting motif with scrolls and shields. We're almost tempted to say Deco Gothic-est...as even the fitters for the shades seem to have a Deco-Gothic look about them. Wonderful condition. The drop-in shades are in good condition. Co-existing at the same time as slip shade lighting, it was a fashion that had a more reliable and safer mounting shade than slip shades. There was, and is, a preference for this type of shade for a more traditional look. Measurements: * Height: 21" * Spread: 15 ½" This fixture can be lengthened by adding chain links. Art Deco Streamline 5 Light Chandelier by Mid-West Mnf Fine Streamline Art Deco five shade chandelier...circa 1937 - 1939...made by Mid-West Mnf of North Kansas City, MO. This is both an attractive chandelier, and an interesting historical development of the Mid-West Chandelier company. As we emerged from the Deco slip-shade era...manufacturers were scrambling for designs, and yet...wary of the cost factors of the Depression, they tried to use some designs already established. The stem and canopy of this nice chandelier was taken from the slip shade chandelier series they called: The Beverly. And...maintaining Mid-West's renowned quality, this fixture has BRONZE and nickel plated metal elements mixed together for a great quality presentation. This bronze with nickel highlights finish was as striking during the 30s just as it is today. It is definitely a contrast that was part of the Art Deco Streamline statement in lighting. The shades, too, are worth mentioning, since the quality of these is simply nice. Nice striated sides, with clear glass top rims...they have a gentle cream color is just so nice. There is some roughness around the fitters, which is so typical after 80 odd years of use...but the presentation just says quality. Places of the finish are a mite thin...like an old Persian carpet. The minor metal is showing some of its 80 or so years, but this finish is considered good for this age of fixture. These were part of their Newport series...Circa 1935. These sconces were part of the 1920s-30s Modern design school of thought. We now call it...Streamline. Metal finish is pewter. Both amber shades are in very nice condition, with just a slight bit of roughness that reflects their age.
