Japy Freres Large Gilt Brass Clock ~ French - Circa 1870 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A lovely, top quality original antique French clock from the famous maker Japy Freres. It is classical Louis XVI in style, architectural in shape with the movement mounted above an elaborate panel flanked by columns. The domed top is surmounted by a large urn with trailing foliage. The whole case is profusely decorated with floral foliage and acanthus and sits on acanthus bracket feet. It is a heavy clock, beautifully modelled and finished with a good original gild. The dial is also gilt brass with 12 individual enamel cartouches and original blued steel hands. The bezel is fitted with convex, bevelled glass. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen. The French movement is by Japy Freres and has the makers 'Grande Medaille D'Honneur' on the backplate. It is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition just an occasional tiny nibble to the cartouches. Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. It is well modelled in gilt brass with winged mythical creatures to the front, scrolling foliage and a large elaborate urn to the top. It is not too deep in design so would fit easily on a mantle and it is beautifully clean and bright in its original gilding. The dial is also gilt brass with 12 individual enamel cartouches and blued steel hands. The French movement is by A.D. Mougin and is of high quality. This truly is a stunning Victorian mahogany bracket clock, which is of superb grand proportions. This is a superb clock made by the renowned makers Winterhalder & Hoffmeier in Schwarzenbach, Germany. The movement is lovely being quarter striking with a 'ting tang' strike. The arched dial is silvered and is set out with Roman numerals the silvered dial is in lovely condition. The dial is covered with glass framed in brass and is finished with pretty fingers. The arch to the dial contain the facility to regulate the clock namely the 'FAST/SLOW' and also the 'CHIME / SILENT' facility. The case has a lovely shaped curved top which is finished with superb shaped moulding and two lovely petite finials. The dial is flanked with quarter reeded columns which are finished with lovely brass inlay to the base of the column. The clock is raised on pretty little brass bun feet. The clock is happily ticking away and keeping good time having recently been cleaned and serviced. The movement is lovely and clean as can be seen from the photographs The clock chimes one 'ting tang' on the quarter past, two 'ting tangs' on the half past and three 'ting tangs' on the quarter to. Finally it then strikes the hours on the hour. The movement is accessed by a door to the rear which has a fretted metal panel lined in red fabric which allows the sound of the gong to attenuate. The movement is stamped with 'W & H Sch 3' which is the trademark for the renowned makers Winterhalder & Hoffmeier in Schwarzenbach, Germany. These were regarded a one of the finest clockmakers of the Victorian period. In addition this clock comes complete with it's original pendulum and winding key. Anton Winterhalder married the daughter of Johan Hofmeier and established a factory, moving to Neustadt in 1895. Four of Antons sons followed their father in business each having his own factory with Linus Winterhalder co-ordinating. The firm made high quality clocks mainly for the English market. DIMENSIONS: The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are: - 11.5 inches wide - 7 inches deep - 14.25 inches high AGE: The clock is Victorian and dates to circa 1890.   « Less
