This head is Kiganda. This is tricky: the tribe is Buganda; their name for people and things is Kiganda; an individual is a Muganda; and their language is Luganda. One can understand why they are now simply referred to as Ganda. The Ganda are the most important ethnic group in Uganda (a country in East Africa). The head is of mvuli wood but it is not a traditional carving. We would hesitate to call it a Ganda head although it was certainly made by someone from Uganda probably around 1950 or so. The head measures 7 and one half inches high by 5 and one half inches long by 2 and three quarter inches wide. « Less

an unsually fine bronze sculpture of Spinario, the legendary "Boy with the Thorn in his Foot." It was cast around 1900 by the art sculpture foundry, H. Gladenbeck & Sohn, of Berlin, Germany. He is listed in Harold Berman's book on bronze sculptures and founders, 1800-1930, and is famous for his high quality detailed renditions of classic works. This is not a typically small bronze, but of substantial size. The dimensions are approximately 12 1/2" high, 5" wide at the base, and 9 1/4" long at the base. It is very heavy, weighing nearly 20 lbs.Footnote: The Gladenbeck foundry was founded by Carl Gustav Hermann Gladenbeck in 1851 and was run by various family members and shareholders until the early years of the 20th century. In 1857 the company relocated to Berlin, and in 1888 became Aktien-Gesellschaft H. Gladenbeck und Sohn; directed by Hermann Gladenbeck and sons Oskar and Alfred. Here is an impressive very large French bronze sculpture by the American woman artist Sara G. Wright, who studied with Felix Maurice Charpentier (1858-1924) in Paris. This bronze, of a mother and child, is signed by the artist and dated 1907. The foundry mark, "CONVERSET RONDEUR," also appears on the bronze, along with the location, Paris. The bronze measures 22 1/2 inches or 57 centimeters high and 17 1/2 inches or 44.5 centimeters wide. It is approximately 15 inches or 39.5 centimeters deep. It shows a mother seated with her daughter on a rocky outcropping. The mother's face is down turned and peaceful as she leans protectively over her child, who leans on her lap. Please see photos for more on the look of this very expressive--as well as impressive--bronze. The condition of this bronze is excellent. The color or patination of the bronze is a dark chocolate brown, with some golden highlights showing. Again, please see photos. Sara G. Wright (b. 1875 in Chicago) studied with Felix Maurice Charpentier (1858-1924) in Paris. Please reference "Who Was Who in American Art" edited by Falk, p. 696. Charpentier exhibited at the Salon from 1884 onwards and won several medals. Wright's work reflects her apprenticeship with Charpentier, who was known for his freedom of expression and for embracing modern art.
