William IV, dated February 5 1836 1836 Silkwork School Sampler by Mary Jones. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with linen backing and brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours dark brown, navy blue, light brown, black, gold and dark green. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-7. Verse titled ''HYMN TO PROVIDENCE.'' reads ''The Lord my pasture shall prepare,> And feed me with a shepherd''s care;> His presence shall my wants supply,> And guard me with a watchful eye;> My noon-day walks he shall attend,> And all my midnight hours defend.> When in the sultry glebe I faint,> Or on the thirsty mountains pant,> To fertile vales and dewy meads,> My weary wandering steps he leads;> Where peaceful rivers soft and slow,> Amid the verdant landscape flow.''. Signed and dated ''Mary Jones her Work Guilffield School February 5 1836''. A good set of motifs, including flowers, birds, diamonds, fir trees and crowns. Fair. A number of holes. A few stains around the edge. Uniform age darkening of the ground inside the stretcher frame. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. Slight colour run around the verse and signature. Stretching is slightly uneven. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border with a meandering floral border inside. Colours green, cream, copper, gold, light green, magenta, pink and black. Verse entitled ''On The Life Of Christ'' reads ''1> Behold where in a mortal storm,> Appears each grace Divine> The virtues all in Jesus met,> With mildest Radiance shine,> 2> To spread the Rays of Heavens light> To give the Mourner Joy,> To preach glad tidings to the Poor> Twas this divine employ> ??? Alphabet A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-20 and then 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70. Verse entitled ''TRUST IN PROVIDENCE'' reads ''Almighty Father of mankind,> On thee my hopes remain> And when the day of trouble comes,> I shall not trust in vain.> In early years Thou art my guide,> And of my youth the friend,> And as my days begin with thee,> With thee my days shall end.'' Colours gold, cream, light brown, dark brown, pink, light green, magenta, olive green and blue. Alphabet A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads ''Virtues the chiefest beauty of the mind> The noblest ornament of human kind> Virtues our safeguard and our guiding star> That stirs up reason when our senses err''.
