Late 17th Century, or Early 18th Continental Oil, of a beautiful Rubenesque woman wearing rich sumptuous garments, her fair hair peeking out from under her turban. She is reading with full attention to her book. The lovely woman is dressed in a rich low cut gown accented by a large necklace which falls between her generous cleavage.
The painting, an oil on board has all the attributes of a Flemish, or Dutch masterpiece of the late 17th, early 18th century in the manner of Peter Paul Rubens.
I do not see a signature on the painting which is on an oval 7x5.75 Inch hand chamfered board. Undoubtedly worthy of a museum. The original hand carved frame is of the period and bears similar characteristics to frames from the Low Countries and Spain.
Condition is very good. There is craquelature and some scratching well preserved under the original varnish. There is a small scratch lower right edge of board. « Less

CARL KAHLER, oil painting on canvas, late 19th century, woman with gray thorobred race horse. Kahler was a well known listed American artist (Benizet), famous for his beautifully rendered horse and cat paintings. The female figure was a popular model at the time of the painting, and was known as the "IVORY SOAP GIRL." She also modeled for advertising for Coca Cola. Perhaps you have seen her on old trays. Born in Linz, Austria in 1855. Kahler studied at the Munich Art Academy and in Paris. During the 1880s he was well known in Germany and Austria. An itinerant artist, in 1886 he sailed for Australia where his works were well received and in demand. While there, he was awarded the commission for four paintings of the Melbourne Cup (racing event) and others in New Zealand. Upon moving to San Francisco from NYC in 1891, he opened a studio where he specialized in figure painting. Condition: excellent, original gilt Art Nouveau period frame. Measurements: 4 ft height x 3 ft width. « Less

Charming, KPM style hand painted oval porcelain plaque in an extraordinary original gilded frame. This lovely German plaque is titled "Contemplation" nach Piot which denotes being "after" the famous portrait artist Adolphe Piot (1850-1910). It is also marked made in Germany. It is signed on the front by the actual artist but I cannot make out the name. What makes this plaque superior to the vast majority of this kind of antique plaque on the market today is the quality and condition of both the art and the frame. This plaque has the finest antique gilded frame I have seen. Not only beautifully made but superbly gilded with all the high points a shiny gold and the low points matte. Both the plaque and the frame are in mint original condition, with only a fine hairline shrinkage crack on the bottom joints of the frame. This plaque and frame have been in a professionally made, black lacquered shadow box since it was new. We did take it apart to look at the markings on the rear of the plaque. Fresh from a local Brooklyn estate. More pictures available. Gilt frame 15" high x 12 1/2" wide, plaque 9 1/2" x 7", shadow box 16 1/4" x 14". « Less

Very large pair of Orientalist art prints. As good as they get in the Orientalist style of the late 19th century, signed by the very well known and listed Italian artist, More »
Very large pair of Orientalist art prints. As good as they get in the Orientalist style of the late 19th century, signed by the very well known and listed Italian artist, Luigi Crosio (1835- 1915). Crosio was a painter and lithographer who studied at the Accademia Albertina di Bella Arte Torino in the 1850's. These prints are a wonderful example of this Aesthetic Movement style for which he is well known. One is of a dancing girl in a court yard surrounded by colorfully dressed musicians who all appear to be women. The other is of a women reclining on a couch in a luxurious room. She is being fanned by a servant while another servant admits a visitor from behind an elaborate drape. Each print is done in rich jewel tones and set in it's fine, original gilt gesso frame. Each print also retains it's original glass and wood back. Signed L. Crosio in the lower right corner. The prints are in good condition, the only damage is a long and short crease on the print of the reclining woman. The frames are both in good condition with small, minor touch ups to the original gilding. The white streaks and blotches in the photos are reflections on the glass of our lights. 30 1/2 "high x 40 1/2" wide. « Less

Very large, American School, portrait of a young women in a winter setting. This is a bold and beautiful oil on canvas painting of a handsome young women, warmly dressed in a fur trimmed coat and muff. She is standing on the edge of a frozen pond, ice skates draped over one arm. It is not clear whether she is arriving or leaving. She is pictured in 3/4 profile, facing the artist. The backdrop is a winter wonderland of snow covered mountains and pine trees in the distance and leafless trees close to the frozen pond. Her clothing is luxurious and elegant with fur trim and a hint of lace. Under her matching plumed hat, her dark hair is done in long ringlets. It is very nicely framed in an elaborate Victorian gilt gesso frame that suits the painting perfectly. Painted by a skilled hand, this is one of the most striking paintings we have ever owned. The painting is in good condition, re-lined, with some surface cracking that does not detract from it's looks. The period gold-gilt frame appears to have old, well done, restorations and original gilding and is over-all in good condition. Artist signed in the lower right corner, I am not sure of the name. « Less
