Necklace composed of antique carnelian, rock crystal, and chalcedony beads dating from the early Bronze Age through the Roman period. The love of ornament is as old as civilization itself. By wearing jewelry that is unusual or unique, we define ourselves as individuals and set ourselves apart from the crowd. Throughout antiquity, in every great culture, beads were formed from colored gems, glass, ceramic, shell, bone and metal in an endless variety of shapes and sizes. Sometimes they were worn for their magical or curative powers, at other times simply for their beauty. They were worn by people, highborn and low, the citizen of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Judea, Greece, Rome and Byzantium. Frequently these jewels, so prized in life, were buried with their owners to adorn them through eternity. When we wear them today, we add another chapter to their long and fascinating history. - (SB.1197) « Less

Style: Classical Revival Coin Necklace
Medium: Gold
The intricate craftsmanship of this stunning gold coin pendant and necklace aspires to recreate the glories of antiquity. Created during the Classical Revival, a period where modern Europe looked towards the past and reinterpreted the ancient forms of Greece and Rome anew. This trend was the product of a heightened comprehension and increased awareness of the treasures of the past derived from excavations in the new scientific field of archaeology. Perhaps the Classical Revival also reveals a latent longing towards the Arcadian lifestyles of yesterday abandoned as Europe rapidly industrialized and urbanized. Thus, the gold of this necklace becomes even more spectacular. The centerpiece of the pendant is a gold coin imitating the style of those minted under Severan dynasty that ruled Ancient Rome. As the world changes, doubt and fears over the future forced some to look towards the simpler times of antiquity for security and inspiration. The lasting popularity of the Revival is surely also influenced by the creation of a new class of noveau riche aristocrats attempting to connect with the language and style of wealth and the elegant aura of Greece and Rome. A woman wearing this necklace evokes both the image of a Roman priestess in a toga and a Victorian princess in an evening gown. Overall, this necklace demonstrates that the timeless beauty of a classic never goes out of style. - (FJ.7255) « Less

Style: Coin Pendant
Medium: Gold
For thousands of years, kings and emperors have adorned their coinage with symbols of power and majesty. This token, minted by the emperor Franz Josef during the light of the Hapsburg Dynasty, continues in that long tradition. On one side, the emperor is shown wearing state robes, carrying the orb and scepter; on the other, winged angels support a coat of arms topped by an imperial crown. Such a coin evokes the glittering splendors of Vienna, the last golden moment when Europe teetered on the brink of the modern age but still looked to its glorious past. - (FJ.0315) « Less

Origin: Europe
Circa: 18 th Century AD to 19 th Century AD
Collection: Classical Revival Gold Coin Pendant
Medium: Gold
In 19th century Europe, skilled goldsmiths recreated exact replicas of jewelry from the classical world. Virtually indistinguishable from the originals on which they were based, these ornaments in the antique style were popular among the learned aristocracy. Such a jewel proclaimed a link with the glories of the classical past; when coins set in gold were a mark of political allegiance. This splendid pendant has at its center a copy after an Aureus of the emperor Aurelian, who reigned between A.D. 270-275. Bold and delicate by turns, it evokes a timeless aura of power, luxury, and grandeur. In our age as in any other, these qualities are unmistakable. - (FJ.4543) « Less
