This antique gold gilt wood Buddha is depicted in a gesture found only in Laos, referred to as "Calling for Rain" or “Calling the Rain Over a Kingdom Affected by Drought” where he stands with his hands held outwards symmetrically at his side. The image stands on a very high multitiered and round base which is as tall as the carved image which rests on it. One of the widely accepted canons in Buddhist art in Laos is that a high pedestal reflects a deep and unwavering respect for the Buddha. 24" x 6.5" round base   « Less

The pair is Pyin-sa-yu-pa, the animal of the five virtues, a composite with wings of a bird, tail of a fish, body of a snake, antlers of a deer, and trunk and tusks of an elephant. Pyin-sa-yu-pa is the designated vehicle for transporting Ka-te, the kind of the planets in Indian and Burmese astrology. Each carving has original pigmentation and affixed genuine antlers but which were added later to the statue, but several decades ago. Carvings of this animal are still being made, but since it is prohibited to use real antlers, these are extremely rare. They were placed in a Burmese Temple, but Since ka-te is not an important Burmese deity, these would have been placed on the sides of the temple, rather than on a pagoda platform. 31" x 27" x 12" I love their unique features, each expressively different.   « Less

This is a Japanese woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro called "The Widow of Asahiya" or "The Widow of Hinodeya". She has just stepped out of the bath and is drying her face. At the top left is a cartouche with a rising sun which refers to Hinodeya (The Rising Sun Shop), possibly owned by her deceased husband. The lock of hair beneath the game board in the cartouche gives rise to the word "widow." The sheet measures 15-3/8" high x 10-3/8" wide. There is a signature at the center and lower right. The artist lived from 1753-1806 and produced the original about 1795-96. This particular print comes from a later edition, probably around 1920 or so. The condition is very good. There are no tears, and the image has not been glued down. There is a minor crease on the upper right corner. I have many other vintage Japanese woodblocks by various artists.
