William IV, dated 1835 1835 Silkwork Sampler by Sally Thomas Middleton. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering floral border. Colours green, copper, gold, navy blue and black. Verse entitled ''The brevity of human life'' reads ''What is life a breath a dream> A bubble, on a rapid stream> A lurid shade with scarce a ray> A short and stormy winters day> A falling star a ??? flower> A passing cloud an autumn shower> A flying sh?? le?? na?? a sp??> So short and frail the life of man''. Signed and dated ''Sally Thomas Middleton''s Work in the 14 year of her age 1835''. A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, flowers, crowns, a fruit basket, bird and fruit trees. Generally Good. A number of holes. A few small stains. Uniform age darkening of the ground. Some stitch losses to the verse and signature. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Glued around the edges only, to a wooden stretcher frame. Brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Wonderful floral border. Colours gold, blue, copper, black, dark brown and dark green. Verse entitled ''THE IVY'' reads ''Ivy!thou art ever green,> Let me changeless,then, be seen,> Whil my Saviour loves me, ne''er,> Let my love grow old and sere.> Ivy!clinging round the tree,> Gladly would I learn of thee,> Clinging,as the year goes round,> To the cross would I be found.''. Signed and dated ''Sarah Priscilla Wright 1847''. Floral motifs and a bird perched on a flowering branch. Good. A few small holes in the top right corner, and along the left edge. One repair in the bottom right corner. A few stains and specks. No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Alphabets A-Z in lower case and numbers 1-12, also family names and initials. Verse reads ''When I was young I little thought> That Learning was to dearly bought> But now Experience tells me how> If I will learn then I must bow> And theW A willing cheerful Mind> To please my Friends Who are to kind''. Signed and dated ''Mary Ann Mossom Aged 8 in the Year 1821. A good set of motifs, including hearts, dogs, birds, fruit basket, blossoming trees, crowns, diamonds and Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life. Generally Good. Signed and dated ''Margaret Baineses Specimen Weld Bank School 1833''. A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, geese, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, baskets, swans and butterflies. Good. Two holes. A few light, patchy stains, and slight discolouration around the edges. Very minor stitch loss to one potted flowering plant motif. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
