Antique Esfahan ( Isfahan ) Rug from Persia, circa 1900 - What immediately stands out on this extraordinary antique Isfahan are the soft blue arabesques which radiate from smaller star medallions. But the real pattern that underlies and stuctures this allover design is the geometric forms - four-armed quatrefoils defined by soft red arabesque tracery that enclose or frame the blue elements. The blue arabesques and red outlines come together in the main border, which continues the rhythm and sweet, delicate coloration of the field, endowing the carpet with a dominant visual unity. The drawing is rather free, informal, and animated, imparting an almost playful aspect to the composition. The real glory of the carpet, however, is the use of color, with its soft reds, rose, pale blues, apricot, mauve, and ivory, all set against a variegated pale cocoa field.
