This is a highly carved tile depicting a camel made by the Cambridge Wheatley Company. Glazed in matte brown, the thick glaze pools in the recesses. Only in business for a relatively short period between 1927 and 1936 tiles by this company are not very common. This is a thick and heavy Arts and Crafts tile that shows very well. Condition is fine, the face being unmarked. There is a chip to a back corner that is unseen from the front. This is a fine Victorain tranfer print tile. Set on a cream background, it has light yellow magnolia blossoms and red tinged leaves centered in a geometric border. The registration number on the back dates this design to 1889. I have a number of this design, so if you are contemplating a project that requires several identical tiles, please consider these. Condition shows light scratches to the surface commensurate with age. These would look great interspersed among new tiles in a kitchen backsplash, or used to face a fireplace surround, and individually it provides nice eye appeal. This pot has a great glaze. I love the way the bright red streaks down over the shoulders onto the darker base. It stands about 4 inches tall and about 4 inches wide. It is unmarked, but the dark bottom leads me to believe it was made at Smithfield Pottery. There is some roughness around the rim, which is common for these low-fired pieces, but the rest of this piece is in great shape. It''s a well fired example.
