Antique Sarouk-Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth centurySarouk-Farahans are renowned among Persian carpets for the refined and elegant treatment of classical medallion designs. But this example is distinguished not only by the grace and finesse of its design, but above all by its unusual allover composition. The basic design consists of interlacing spiral tendrils, but the changes in the ground color create a compartment or cartouche effect, entirely transforming the visual impression. The palmette border is also exceptionally lush, almost Mughal in style. Add to this the reserved palette of earthen tones and pale blues, and we have here one of the most extraordinary Sarouk-Farahans to be found. At the center of the field is a scalloped medallion with large finials. Arabesque spandrels complement the medallion at the four corners of the field, while the intervening tan ground is filled with a ‘millefleurs’ pattern reminiscent of embroidered Kashmir shawls. In the main border a finely proportion interlacing vinescroll is set against cool blue ground that echoes the central medallion. Antique Shirvan, Caucasus, late nineteenth century A series of geometric medallions in ivory and red repeats across a dark blue ground on this meticulously detailed antique Shrirvan. Within each of these is a smaller quatrefoil medallion spewing forth branches or vines rendered as latchhooks, with smaller stylized animals scattered across the remaining space. A series of borders enclose the field – first an S-Dragon border, then a stylized vinescroll, and finally a double vinescroll or ‘crab” border. Shrivans are prized for the perfection of their weave and their crisp drawing, but this example is exceptional even among the best of its kind. Antique Shahsevan Long Rug, from Persia, circa 1870 Larger Shahsevan rugs are uncommon, and often they are mistaken for rugs from the nearby Caucasus region. This spectacular example has the unusual design, spontaneous drawing, and rich color that sets them apart from Kazaks or Karabaghs. A series of large diamond latch hook medallions repeats down the field, each enclosed in a compartment of different color. Inner stepped medallions with linear embellishment fill the diamonds, whose interior coloration varies as well. The remainder of each compartment has a varied array of space fillers. An exciting border of hooked elements, simplified trees, and diamond rosettes is set against red ground that firmly frames and anchors the dynamic composition of the field, with one last outer wine-glass border on an ivory ground as the final touch.
