English Black Basalt Wedgwood Round Dish, Diameter:7 3/4". Historically: Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), his grandfather and great-grandfather had been potters, and in his early 20's Joseph formed a partnership with the preeminent English potter of the day, Thomas Whieldon. Josiah Wedgwood had practiced with glazing, bodies, shapes, and colours, and in 1759 his dreams came true when two relatives leased him the Ivy House in Burslem to allow him to start his own pottery business. He had marred well and in1766 he bought Etruria, in Staffordshire, as a base for his factory. In 1782 he perfected a tool for measuring heat in kilns. On the basis of his work Wedgwood was elected to the Royal Society in 1783. He had developed durable china called the Queen's Ware, a cream-coloured, lead-glazed earthenware, "Potter to Her Majesty". Queen's Ware became an enormous success spread the name of Wedgwood across all of Europe. In 1768 Wedgwood developed a fine black porcelain called Black Basalt. With this fine-grained stoneware he was able to produce copies of the newly excavated Etruscan pottery from Italy. The new innovation proved another huge commercial success. The surface was lustrous and smooth, with a purple-black sheen. Wedgwood's factory could scarcely keep up with the demand for candlesticks, medallions, tableware, and vases in the material. This particular round dish is reflecting the interest of the day and is in good condition. « Less

Pair of soft Blue and White, Jasper Ware Wedgwood circular small dishes with the English Crest, city of London, 4 1/4 " diameter, in good condition. Historically speaking Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), his grandfather and great-grandfather had been potters, and in his early 20's Joseph formed a partnership with the preeminent English potter of the day, Thomas Whieldon. Josiah Wedgwood had practiced with glazing, bodies, shapes, and colours, and in 1759 his dreams came true when two relatives leased him the Ivy House in Burslem to allow him to start his own pottery business. This particular Bust is reflecting the revival of the classics and interest of the day. Another innovation for which Wedgwood is remembered was Jasper Ware, which has been described as the most important invention in the history of ceramics since the discovery of porcelain. It took Wedgwood years of experimentation to perfect his design for this unglazed stoneware with the uncanny ability to be both durable and delicate, and to take colours so evenly throughout its surface. Jasper can be almost any colour, although the most famous examples are are pale or dark blue and white. Jasper Ware is also famous for the bas relief applied to the sides, often in imitation of classical Greek motifs. This pair of small decorative Jasper Ware dishes are quite nice and good color for any decor. « Less

Detailed Blue and White Charger of the Death of Socrates, Diameter of Charger: 23", signed by A. Andrade, dated 1945. The description and visual of the Death of Socrates, is that Socrates opposed the Sophists, arguing that there are absolute, transcultural standards of right and wrong, good and bad. He argued , that once we recognize what is truly good, we will act in accord with that knowledge--hence his claim that "the virtues are a kind of knowledge." He also firmly believed that the cosmos is grounded in goodness, hence that a good person cannot suffer unduly and that death is not something to be feared. Plato recounts the last hours of Socrates' life in a moving dialogue. This is the end of his final speech, just after he had been condemned to death by the citizens of Athens, his home town. The method of execution was that the condemned should drink a cup of hemlock, a not uncommon mode of execution in that period of time of the classics. The detail of this charger recounts this passage and is signed by the artist depicting the Death of Socrates. Located in the heart of Summerland, California, Lifestyle Antiques & Interiors offers the finest high-end Antiques, Decorative Arts, and Home Furnishings on the South Coast. Capo di Monte Place Settings, Signed on the back: "Palazzo Reale Napoli, G.M." or "The Royal Palace of Naples". Set of 24 plates - 12 dinner plates, 12 More »
Capo di Monte Place Settings, Signed on the back: "Palazzo Reale Napoli, G.M." or "The Royal Palace of Naples". Set of 24 plates - 12 dinner plates, 12 salad or desert plates. One of a kind unique collection. Salad plates: 7.5" diameter. Dinner plates: 11" diameter. Excellent condition. Acquired through the former Vatican ambassador to the United Nations. Capodimonte: The relief style, highly colored and defined porcelain pieces are commonly called and identified in our current market place as Capo-di-Monte. It was King Ferdinand IV, son of King Charles who opened a factory in Naples in 1771 and began to use the mark of the blue crown N (BCN). When the factory closed in 1834, the Ginori family at Doccia near Florence, Italy, acquired what was left of the factory and continued using its mark. The factory continued until 1896 when it was then combined with Societa Ceramica Richard of Milan which continues today to manufacture fine porcelain pieces marked with a crest and wreaths under a blue crown with R Capodimonte. As more collectors recognize and appreciate the quality of the older ware, buyer demand drives prices higher. « Less
