It is framed in a contemporary mission style frame made from quartersawn white oak. The edge of the tile has a few chips which are hidden by the oak frame. This is a fine broacade tile from the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works founded by Henry Chapman Mercer. It is a Persian inspired flourish of a milkweed pod covered in an egobe green slip. These were made to be grouted into plaster walls and become one of the decorative elements of the house. It is unsigned as are most of the old original antique tiles made by this company. Made by A.R. Cole, the frothy glaze of this strawberry jar is outstanding. The mixture of red, pink, and white in a high gloss sets this one apart from the pack. It has six incised openings for plants and 3 holes for hanging, but this stunner was never used and is in excellent condition. There is one area on the edge of one opening that appears to be a glaze miss, and is only noticed by feeling the roughness of the exposed red clay. This is a fabulous old tile by the Enfield Pottery and Tile Works of Enfield, Pennsylvania. It is described in their 1928 catalog as ''Morrice Dancers in low relief. After ivory carvings in the British Museum. Date, middle ages'' design number 301-3. The tile itself measures 9'' x 4'' and is in wonderful condition with a flake to the left border. It is in a new dark oak frame and is ready to hang on the wall. This is a fine tile, and works by Enfield surface only rarely. In a response to the Cold War, many items had a patriotic theme. This minuteman tile was made by the Mosaic Tile Company in 1957, and was a salesman''s sample. The ''Patriot Series'' was designed by David Fink, and was touted in period literature as ''the new note for school walls''. The advertisement goes on to describe the series as ''the great events of early American history in fresh, modern design…in tile!'' and to ''feature these multi-color glazed inserts in tile walls of corridors, classrooms, libraries, washroom, and auditoriums. (Ideal for home nurseries too.)'' More commonly seen in the 6'' x 6'' format, the tiles were also used as giveaways by the Lane Furniture Company (remember those cedar chests?). The glaze on this tile has a frosted quality and is in perfect condition. It retains the firmly affixed paper label on the rear describing it as a sample and the design number 528.
